How about an independent commission of disinterested third parties? How about a simple question: What is the projected 10 year STATE revenue flow from liquor sales public vs private?

  • Teddy Goodson

So the Big Money is coming in from the Big Box and other retailers who are dazzled by the expectation of huge profits for themselves if allowed to sell liquor. May I ask where the opposition from religious leaders is? And Mr. McDonnell such a darling of the evangelicals, my my.

Years ago, when I lived in Kansas, which was “dry” in toto (not even govt. booze stores existed, or, rather, they existed only on military posts like Ft. Leavenworth, Ha), the local pastors and preachers regularly got steamed up and sermonized hell and brimstone against opening up Kansas to liquor stores. Guess what, the preachers and the moonshiners anad speakeasy owners got together to oppose legal alcohol. Now, that’s Free (Blaack)Market.

Then there was “local option” which meant that one county sold booze legally, the one next door might not, so when you rode the trains (Atcheson, Topeka, & the Santa Fe) across the state the club car would open and close its bar over and over as we whistle stopped cross country.

Since McDonnell so hates government, why not let Virginia counties do local option on booze? It would create jobs (both legal and illegal) and give sheriffs something to do, chasing moonshiners.
