Manchin Threatening to Bolt Party 6 Days After Getting Elected

Joe ManchinBefore he’s even sworn in as a U.S. senator, Joe Manchin is already threatening to leave the Democratic Party unless he’s showered with gifts:

Aside from his pick of committee assignments (likely the Energy and Natural Resources Committee), Manchin might get support for one of his pet projects — a plant to convert coal to diesel fuel that has stalled under Democratic leadership in Washington. […]

“He was elected as a Democrat and he has to go to Washington as a Democrat to try, in good faith, to make the changes in the party he campaigned on,” said one Manchin advisor. “Now, if that doesn’t work and Democrats aren’t receptive, I don’t know what possibilities that leaves open.”

If Joe Manchin is so eager to join the GOP, why didn’t he do it before election? Oh, right. Because he’d have gotten obliterated in this or any other GOP primary. Any Democrat who offers any sort of “reward” to Manchin for staying in the party shouldn’t be surprised if they suddenly find dozens of other Democrats with their hand out for goodies as well.

Before you start running around, all panicky about falling skies and what-not, you ought to consider the source of what’s spooked you:

Fox? Really? How much of what you see on Fox is factual?

Now, I don’t trust Manchin to be a Democrat in any way. But nor do I panic because of something from Fox.

Because, you know, Fox knows how to panic Democrats. As you’ve shown.

So really, if he’s going to be a shithead now, he might as well get it over with so WV Dems and national progressive groups can recruit someone better who will be more than happy to ride Obama coattails to victory.

    • I’ve posted about this before, but WV politics is always a multiple generation affair.  Manchin comes out of the same county as my grandmother, who was one of those “grande dames” of the Democratic party — you know the type: sparkly pins and donkey styled clothes and hats that you wear to the convention.

She always insisted that Manchin was a Democrat only because he couldn’t win as a Republican in their county.  (This was certainly true.)  She described him as “mutton dressed as lamb.”  So if he did switch parties, it certainly wouldn’t surprise me.  On the other hand, she’s been dead nearly 20 years, and Manchin hasn’t switched yet.  Still, she’d be the first one laughing if he did.

Still, please believe me when I say that given the choices between Joe Manchin, Republican or Democrat, and John Raese, the Republican who ran against him, we are far, FAR better off.  Raese is absolutely horrible — especially in regards to workers rights and safety — and I would have worked for almost ANYONE in WV rather than have him.

At some point, Democrats lose WV altogether.  It’s part of the costs of moving from a 20th century manufacturing economy into a 21st century technological and service economy.  It breaks my heart, as someone who comes out of a long (LONG) term WV Democratic family, but it’s not terribly hard to understand.
