The food desert piece in SW Virginia and East TN.  To qualify as a food desert a place has to have the only access to food be fast food or convenience stores, but a majority of the localities they’ve noted have full-service grocery stores available.  Food Lion, Food City, Kroger – heck, Johnson City, in Washington Co. TN, has a Sam’s Club.  I can’t tell if the Sam’s at exit 7 near Bristol is in Washington Co. Va or in Bristol City, but regardless, there are plenty of grocery stores in Abingdon.
