Moran Statement on Unfair Targeting of Federal Workers in Payroll Tax Conference Agreement

(Good job, thanks to Rep. Moran for defending federal workers! – promoted by lowkell)

Today Congressman Jim Moran, took to the House floor to speak out against H.R. 3430, the temporary extension of the payroll tax cut conference report:

Moran’s full statement regarding the payroll tax conference agreement:

“Extending a tax cut for the middle class by taking from the paychecks of middle class federal workers is not fair, nor does make sense.

“Under this agreement, new federal employees will see a nearly 400 percent increase in their contributions to their retirement – without an increase in their benefits. Let me be clear: without a corresponding increase in benefits, a larger contribution is simply a pay cut.

“By forgoing two years of pay raises, federal employees have already sacrificed more than $60 billion in lost income – the only constituency to have done so in the name of deficit reduction.

“This bill sends a signal to our federal workforce that we do not appreciate their hard work. In the next five years, nearly half of the federal workforce will be eligible for retirement. Only 6 percent of college graduates polled want to work for the government. The Federal Government should be doing everything it can to boost recruitment and retention efforts. This conference agreement does just the opposite and therefore I can’t support it.”

Congressman Jim Moran is a leading advocate for federal employees. Virginia’s 8th District is home to more than 65,000 federal workers and where more than 110,000 show up to work.

Hate to see anyone go without raises and have to pay more into their retirements, but I’m having a hard time feeling too sorry for them.  We State employees are now in our fifth year with no raises, we’re paying more for our retirements and will likely be asked to pay even more while the Governor is using our retirement fund to balance the budget.  This while costs continue to rise – parking, health insurance, etc.

So to the Federal employees, Welcome!  Times are tough all over.

Federal workers were always the beneficiaries of a more generous compensation package than us state workers.  It was decided when John Garber was head of Virginia personnel that Virginia would not try to compete with the feds instead she would compare our compensation package with such delightful places as Mississippi, South Carolina etc. That is just the breaks and is not the point.  When the Republicans, who have a long history of this, piss on the federal people we should be just as outraged as if they were pissing on us.  By the same token, the feds should be just as outraged when we get pissed on as when they do.  Locals should feel the same way as well.  Public workers need to stand together, an assault on one is an assault on all.  Otherwise we are fragmented and easy to conquer. Which is what the politicians are counting on.

I get so tired of trying to explain to “conservative” Defense employees…………Republicans are not your friends – so quite voting for them!

  • After “Throw Them All Out” by Peter Schweizer exposed Jim Moran for his 90 Trades Of Glory, the best thing ‘Gentleman’ Jim could do is retire in silence.

I would like to apologize to the rest of Virginia for VA-8’s inability to root out this creature.
