Video: Del. Surovell Demolishes Mandatory Minimum Sentences

Delegate Scott Surovell speaks on the floor of the House of Delegates about how mandatory minimum sentencing undermines the U.S. Bill of Rights, the Virginia Declaration of Rights, and the right of citizens to fashion punishments most appropriate for the crime committed.

You tell ’em, Scott! 🙂

Scott and Jim Webb are spot on. In tight economic times, the United States is wasting hundreds of billions of dollars warehousing prisoners under the misguided belief that this is necessary in order to be “tough on crime”. The misguided mandatory minimum sentence bills currently before the VA HOD are just a piece of this larger problem. As Senator Webb has pointed out, the United States has 5% of the world’s total population but 25% of the world’s prison population. Bob McDonnell wasted the entire first year of his administration in a totally misguided attempt to try to help fund our enormous transportation deficit by privatizing our ABC stores (don’t hear much from him any more about that, do we?!)Reforming our drug laws and our criminal justice system would be a much better place to look to generate much needed revenue for transportation–and education–in Virginia.
