Dominion Trying to Buy the VA General Assembly; Challenge the “Dominion-opoly”

From the Virginia Sierra Club (I'd just add that Dominion isn't just “trying to buy the VA General Assembly,” it already has!):

The greed of Dominion Virginia Power knows no bounds. Will the General Assembly give Dominion what it wants in an election year with Dominion dangling up to a million dollars in campaign contributions to Republicans and Democrats alike?

Just Say NO to SB1349 and Dominion!Act Today!

Right now Dominion has a bill in the legislature (SB1349 – Senator Frank Wagner) to prohibit review of its overcharges by the State Corporation Commission and to allow the company to keep those overcharges that in the past have been refunded to customers.

Shamelessly, Dominion is using the EPA's climate action, the Clean Power Plan, as their excuse for this power grab.  Dominion is telling legislators that the costs of the EPA's climate plan will be very high, but that Dominion is willing to absorb those costs if the legislators will just freeze their rates and block the State corporation Commission from reviewing them. The problem is that Dominion is on track to score $280 million in excess profits for this past year alone.

We need you to contact your legislators ASAP and let them know that you disapprove of this Dominion power grab and urge them to vote NO on SB1349.

We'll keep you informed on how action on this bill goes, and how your Senator and Delegate voted. Please take action today!

Thank you,

Glen Besa, Director

Dominion is by far the largest contributor to the political campaigns of politicians across the state. Even here in southwest Virginia, hours away from any Dominion customers, Dominion is the largest donor to some of our legislators – even larger than coal companies!

All legislators will be voting on whether this out-of-control “public service” monopoly will succeed in removing itself from public scrutiny. (Imagine, Virginia grants this Dominion Resources a monopoly and then grants it’s demands to severely limit “competition” from rooftop solar. Now, the company says, “Let us regulate our own rates and close our books to the public.”) It could happen if we don’t protest to our legislators, and if it does, Appalachian Power will be next in line, just like when they imposed a standby charge on residential solar generators.

Dominion Power corrupts and complete Dominion Power corrupts absolutely, to borrow from Lord Acton. Write your delegate and senator.

For many electric customers in Virginia.  Those customers should be as outraged as the rest of the state by Dominion’s continued corruption of out state government.  They consistently get legislation through the General Assembly which is harmful to its customer base and to those of us who are not.  While calling to ask your legislator to vote against the “freeze bill” ask them to vote in favor of SB 1166 and SB 1338.  These two bills curtail the power Dominion has over every property owner in the Commonwealth.  Today, the pipeline is proposed for my county, but if you think tomorrow can’t be your county, and your land, you’ve got a lot to learn about what Dominion thinks of you and your rights!
