Virginians Stand With Planned Parenthood

    From Progress VA:

In the face of coordinated and underhanded attacks on Planned Parenthood, which provides quality health care to thousands of women across the commonwealth, Virginia organizations today declared they stand with Planned Parenthood and the women they serve. ProgressVA, New Virginia Majority, the Sierra Club of Virginia, the League of Women Voters of Virginia, and NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia released statements in support of the organization and the compassionate care they provide.

ProgressVA: “Virginians are no strangers to coordinated attacks on women’s health and abortion access. From transvaginal ultrasounds and bills to ban birth control to targeted restrictions designed to shut down women’s health centers, we know this agenda is really about eliminating safe and legal abortion. We stand with Planned Parenthood because we believe that every woman should be able to decide for herself whether and when to start a family. Politicians have no business interfering in private, personal health care decisions. Every woman’s situation is different, which is why we are so grateful for the quality, compassionate care they provide to every woman who walks through their doors.  Shame on the politicians who would exploit crass and underhanded attacks to try to shut down women’s access to reproductive care.”

New Virginia Majority: “Planned Parenthood provides quality, compassionate health care to thousands of Virginia women. These attacks threaten women's access to a trusted health care provider, especially in low-income communities. New Virginia Majority stands with Planned Parenthood because we believe every Virginian should have access to affordable, quality health care without political interference.”

Sierra Club of Virginia“Sierra Club stands with Planned Parenthood and the vital services they provide to millions of Americans. Protecting women's access to health care, including voluntary family planning, is key to fostering a healthy planet.”

League of Women Voters of Virginia“The League of Women Voters of Virginia is dedicated to ensuring access to affordable, quality health care, including reproductive health care, for all Virginia residents. We endorse maintaining and increasing the availability of health care in medically underserved areas. The high-quality services provided by the Planned Parenthood women’s health centers are a key part of the reproductive health care needed in Virginia. The League opposes attempts to limit health care services for women and, therefore,  supports the continuation of Planned Parenthood’s compassionate, quality care provided here in Virginia.”

NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia“Millions of women and families nationwide – including hundreds of thousands of women in Virginia – turn to Planned Parenthood every year for quality, affordable, and compassionate reproductive health care. These heavily-edited videos are part of a much bigger pattern of harassment and violence by extremists whose real goal is to ban abortion, close women’s health centers and cut women off of birth control and lifesaving cancer screenings. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is proud to stand with Planned Parenthood, and we will continue fighting for the Virginia women and families who rely on this organization every single day.”

I am looking at this on the basis of the assumption that this attack on Planned Parenthood is scurrilous, that it is — like so many attacks on aspects of Liberal America — based on lies and distortions and essentially without merit. That is what I believe to be the case, but I confess that I do not know enough to say for sure that Planned Parenthood is blameless hear.

On that basis, it seems to me an important development that other progressive groups involved in completely different issues are rallying to Planned Parenthood’s defense.

The right wing should not be given the opportunity to go after the parts of our body politic associated with Liberal America one piece at a time, picking them off like the way the Romans built their empire at the expense of neighboring peoples. Like the public workers’ unions in Madison on one battlefield and now Planned Parenthood on another.

There is indeed a common enemy here, and it is a good sign that, by this rallying behind Planned Parenthood, these other organizations show they understand that we need to look at the whole battlefield and organize accordingly.

They show that they understand that an attack on Planned Parenthood is part of a larger attack on them as well.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement after voting against legislation to prohibit federal funding for Planned Parenthood:

“For many women and families across the country, Planned Parenthood health centers are their only source of high quality health care. That’s why I voted against legislation that would deny more than 2.5 million Americans important primary care services. For years, activist groups like the Center for Medical Progress have sought to create controversy around Planned Parenthood as a way to reduce women’s access to health care. While the recent videos released by this group highlight a troubling lack of sensitivity on the part of a few individuals, moving to unilaterally defund Planned Parenthood is not the appropriate reaction.”

~ Notes that continued funding is “critical to the health of women and their families” ~

WASHINGTON – U.S. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) issued the following statement on efforts to cut off all federal funding for health services provided by Planned Parenthood:

“Continued funding for the important health services provided by Planned Parenthood is critical to the health of women and their families. There are multiple investigations already underway to determine if there has been wrongdoing. It is a mistake to allow these offensive, though heavily edited, videos to be used as a pretext to launch political attacks designed to deny women access to the important health services like cancer screenings, birth control, and well-woman exams that Planned Parenthood provides.”

Planned Parenthood serves 2.7 million patients annually. 4 in 5 earn 150 percent of the federal poverty level or less. Many would be at risk of losing access to preventive services if Planned Parenthood is defunded.

I agree that having diverse groups support PP is a good thing. My concern is that the message that attacks on PP are failing to be debunked in either print or network tv suggests that the good guys are not penetrating the discussion. I am not keyed in to the degree that I have a solution, but I am really upset that the opposing (factual) message is silenced. Help!
