Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Saturday, June 4. Also check out President Obama’s weekly address, on “Building on America’s Economic Recovery.”

  • From Gov. McAuliffe:

I would like to take a moment to clarify the status of my restoration of rights order to prevent the spread of any misinformation.

On April 22, 2016, on the proudest day of my Administration, I issued an order restoring the civil rights to over 200,000 Virginians. That order applied only to those who had completed their sentences of incarceration and probation/parole. When we announced this order, we were clear that this is an unparalleled administrative undertaking in terms of its size and scope. However, we were motivated in spite of the difficulty because we believe it is the morally right thing to do.

We also knew that there would be some administrative difficulties in an undertaking of this size. Recently there has been discussion about certain individuals who were erroneously included on the list of people who were qualified for restoration. We are actively working to address any and all issues as they arise to make our database as accurate as humanly possible. Our number one priority is ensuring that the people who are covered by this order are all qualified.

Let me be clear about one thing—no one has had his or her rights restored “mistakenly.” In fact, no one who is incarcerated or on parole/probation has had his or her rights restored at all. Because my order is criteria-based, an individual who does not meet the criteria is not covered, even if his or her name appears on a list erroneously. Any individual who attempts to vote who has not had their rights restored would be in violation of the law and can be punished by a felony.

The working administrative database that the Commonwealth is using to administer this order is comprised of more than 17-million data points across several state agencies. Any mission of this magnitude will encounter occasional challenges, but we are constantly working to refine our process and enhance its accuracy, as Virginia government does with any other large dataset.

The vitriol from many opponents of rights restoration is all too familiar, using any excuse or fear of unintended consequences to slow progress and leave people behind. Their motivations are clear – they want to tarnish or slow our work erasing the legacy of a disenfranchisement policy that has been used for more than a century to marginalize Virginians, particularly along racial lines. The Virginians who are covered by our order have done their time and deserve to have a full voice in our society so they can contribute to and benefit from the new Virginia economy we are working so hard to build.

  • So….foaming-at-the-mouth anti-Muslim bigot EW Jackson is a Muhammad Ali fan? Let’s compare and contrast.

Muhammad Ali: “Islam is a religion of peace. Islam does not promote terrorism or the killing of people…If the culprits are Muslim, they have twisted the teachings of Islam.”

EW Jackson: ““I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation, I absolutely would not…Ben Carson got it right…America does not need a Muslim President. Muslims calling for Carson to drop out, should drop out of America.”

Muhammad Ali: “All you need to do is know yourself to set yourself free. We don’t know who we are. We call ourselves negroes, but have you ever heard of a place called Negroland?…See, we have been brainwashed. Everything good and of authority was made white. We look at Jesus, we see a white with blond hair and blue eyes. We look at all the angels, we see white with blond hair and blue eyes. Now, I’m sure if there’s a heaven in the sky and the colored folks die and go to heaven, where are the colored angels? They must be in the kitchen preparing the milk and honey. We look at Miss America, we see white. We look at Miss World, we see white. We look at Miss Universe, we see white. Even Tarzan, the king of the jungle in black Africa, he’s white!”

EW Jackson: “E.W. Jackson lashed out at the “demonic Black Lives Matter movement” and claimed that President Obama wants to accept Syrian refugees because he’s intent on ‘defending Islam’ rather than ‘defending America.'”
