Tuesday News: “Donald Trump’s assault on our values;” “Make time for a civic duty” today — vote!

by Lowell

Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Tuesday, June 14. If you’re a Democrat who lives in Arlington, don’t forget to vote today for Erik Gutshall for County Board. Also, I recommend that 4th CD Democrats vote for Donald McEachin for Congress; and that 1st State Senate district Democrats vote for Shelly Simonds in the special election there. Also check out Samantha Bee’s righteous rant on the Orlando mass murder.

  • Virginia Del. Mark Levine nails it yet again, in reference to The history of the AR-15, the weapon that had a hand in the United States’ worst mass shooting

If you want to make it easy to arm ISIS in Yemen, you are subject to a drone attack: a quick death penalty without trial.

If you want to make it easy to arm ISIS in America, you’re a leader of the NRA. You’re not killed, tried, or even criticized. You’re a Republican hero.

So who has caused the death of more innocent Americans?
    ISIS or the NRA?

Compare the death tolls. It’s not even close.

Del. Mark Levine continues to show political courage.

The article on the history of the AR-15 is worth reading. It was just yesterday that I heard a radio talk show celebrity on WMAL calling gun safety advocates “stupid” because they sometimes get the nomenclature of these weapons wrong, and that they don’t know what they are talking about, etc etc. I was listening to this and thinking, are you kidding me? I was thinking of all the millions of men and women who have had military training in this country on variants of this weapon since its introduction in the Vietnam War. There have been all the mass shootings, all the regular everyday shootings, all the political debates going over the same ground over and over again, like some version of the Groundhog Day movie except without the effort to get things right.

So no, we know what these weapons are and what they can do.

Still, if you want to be an advocate for gun safety, if you mistakenly call a magazine a clip and don’t distinguish between fully automatic assault rifles and semi-automatic rifles, you just give the gun nuts a cheap shot and a way to dismiss you. And if you are a legislator or are proposing legislation, it is critical to know the nomenclature.

  • Video: President Obama demolishes the brain-dead, counterproductive Republican/Trump “argument” that saying the magic words “Radical Islam” will accomplish anything. Also rips Trump a new one for advocating the antithesis of American values. Great stuff, LOVE President Obama, only wish he had done this a loooong time ago.

According to the WMAL talk show host in evening drive time, it is not about labels, it is about rallying public opinion and declaring war on those who have already declared war on us. That’s a near quote. It wasn’t clear whether he was referring to a formal declaration of war or an AUMF. Everyone up for another war in the Middle East please raise your hand.

I’ve also figured out finally that the allegation that Obama has eviscerated our military is a code phrase referring to the military spending brake created by sequestration. I guess a memo has gone out not to mention sequestration itself, because that reminds people of Congress’s role in this.
