Monday News: “It’s beyond debate that Donald Trump is unfit to be president”; Moderators Need to Do Their Job

by Lowell

Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Monday, September 26.

  • Robert Reich:

Donald Trump is part of a wave of authoritarian xenophobes who have come to power in Russia, Poland, Hungary, and who lead such movements as the Independence Party in Britain and the National Front in France. All are building power by wielding nationalist hatred of outsiders and minorities, suppression of dissent, and vacuous promises of “strength.”

This has happened before. The siren song of hate can be seductive, especially to those who feel economically stressed and politically impotent. But it is also deadly. Do we not remember?

Perhaps not. The generation of Americans and Europeans who witnessed Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, and Stalin has now passed. Even their children are aging. Typically, it takes three generations for collective amnesia to set in. Most people alive today do not remember what authoritarian xenophobes can wreak on the world.

But it is important for us all to remember.
