ARLINGTON, Va. – Last night, Delegate Lopez hosted his 2017 Campaign Kick-Off and 3rd Annual Democratic Straw Poll at the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse. After passionate speeches from candidates and campaign representatives, attendees at the Straw Poll cast their votes for Arlington County Board, Arlington School Board, Lieutenant Governor, and Governor.

“With so much at stake this year in Virginia, I’m excited to see so many new faces who are energized and determined to make a difference in this year’s election,” said Delegate Lopez, house democratic whip. “We have a tremendous opportunity this year to change the direction of our Commonwealth.”

With over 120 ballots cast, participants in the straw poll chose Ralph for Governor, Justin Fairfax for Lt. Governor, Erik Gutshall for Arlington County Board, and Monique O’Grady for Arlington School Board.

In the local races, Vivek Patil, Peter Fallon, and Kim Klingler finished in second, third, and fourth places respectively for Arlington County Board. In the School Board race, James Lander came in second place while Maura McMahon came in third.

Delegate Lopez’s 2015 Straw Poll predicted the victories of Christian Dorsey for Arlington County Board and Reid Goldstein for Arlington School Board. In addition, eventual Arlington County Board Member Katie Cristol earned a close third place finish in the Straw Poll, just one percentage point behind County Board Candidate Peter Fallon.

In 2016, the Straw Poll predicted the primary victories of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Arlington School Board nominees Nancy Van Doren and Tannia Talento.

As House Democratic Whip, all of the proceeds for this event will go to support Delegate Lopez’s efforts to elect more Democratic candidates to the House of Delegates. Over the past three years, Delegate Lopez has raised more than $30,000 at the Straw Poll to support Democratic House candidates.

  • Statement by the Erik Gutshall for Arlington County Board campaign:

Arlington, VA — On Wednesday, April 14, Delegate Alfonso Lopez (D-Arlington) hosted the second straw poll of the 2017 campaign for the Democratic nomination for the Arlington County Board. On the heels of his victory in the campaign’s first straw poll on Saturday, Erik Gutshall again emerged victorious, winning Delegate Lopez’ straw poll where all four candidates competed.

“Delegate Lopez is a tireless advocate for his constituents,” said Gutshall, “and I’m honored to earn the backing of his supporters. I pledge to work with Delegate Lopez and Arlingtonians in the 49th district and beyond on the County Board.”

“This victory shows a clear momentum for the Gutshall campaign,” said Gutshall campaign manager Laura Saul Edwards. “Erik is a tried and true, rock-solid progressive that voters know will represent them well on the County Board. Erik’s sweep of the straw polls this year demonstrates his campaign’s broad appeal.”
