As Comey Testifies in Congress, Tom Perriello Releases New Ad: ‘Tyranny’
Ad Features Perriello Invoking Virginia’s Motto and His Record of Standing Up to Authoritarians as a Diplomat In Decrying Donald Trump’s ‘Abuse of Power’
Ad Focuses on Citizen Movements Rising Up to Reject the Politics Trump Represents
Today, as former FBI Director James Comey testifies in Congress that President Trump demanded loyalty from him, despite him overseeing an investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia, before firing him soon after, Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia Tom Perriello is releasing a new ad, saying, “Donald Trump’s abuse of power is real.”
Invoking the Commonwealth’s motto, ‘Sic Semper Tyrannis,’ Perriello ties Virginia’s democratic history of resisting tyranny both to his experience as a diplomat facing down authoritarians overseas and to public resistance to Donald Trump testing the waters of authoritarianism.
The ad features photographs from earlier this year of Perriello joining the Women’s March and the Dulles airport protests of Trump’s travel ban, demonstrating his commitment to being a part of the movements rising up to oppose Trump’s dangerous agenda. Harking back to Trump, Perriello says, “I’m running for governor because we’re better than this. We will resist efforts to take us backwards. Together, we will make Virginia greater than it’s ever been.”
Tom Perriello, direct-to-camera: Virginia was born out of a struggle against tyranny. It’s in our motto. It’s what inspired me to stand up against authoritarians overseas, but I never expected to face this moment back home.
Donald Trump’s abuse of power is real. But so is the power of citizens—from the Women’s March, to Dulles airport, to town halls across Virginia.
I’m Tom Perriello, and I’m running for governor because we’re better than this. We will resist efforts to take us backwards. Together, we will make Virginia greater than it’s ever been.
