Rep. Rob Wittman (R) Disingenuously Touts Award from Koch-Funded Group That Wants to Privatize Social Security, Medicare

by Colleen Berry

In an email sent out today to his constituents in the 1st Congressional District, Rep. Rob Wittman (R) touted an award he received from the 60 Plus Association. The “Guardian of Seniors’ Rights” Award commends Wittman for “his commitment to protect Social Security and Medicare and to work to cut wasteful government spending.”

The email further describes the 60 Plus Association as a “non-partisan organization representing over 7.2 million seniors.”

However, what our Congressman conveniently omits is that the 60 Plus Association is funded by Charles & David Koch (of Koch Industries) via the Freedom Partners, who consider 60 Plus to be part of their “massive conservative political network.” They have donated millions of dollars to candidates, all rightwing Republicans. They are also members of the “Cooler Heads” organization, a climate change denial group that promotes the repeal of EPA regulations on clean air, offshore drilling, and energy subsidies.

60 Plus was formed as a counter to the AARP, but definitely does not have the best interests of seniors in mind, either through its PAC or its stated goals, which include “seeking alternative solutions developed through the private sector, financed through the free enterprise system.” This is doublespeak for privatization of Social Security and Medicare, which will end both programs as we know them.

These are certainly not “good people” to be receiving an award from. To the contrary, it highlights the hypocrisy of Rob Wittman, touting how much of an environmentalist he is, while taking awards from groups that are actively working against a clean Chesapeake Bay and action on climate change. Telling his constituents that he is working for them to protect Social Security and Medicare, while again, accepting accolades from a group whose openly stated goals include dismantling those very programs, is simply not honest. It seems obvious to us where Rep. Rob Wittman’s allegiances lie — and it’s not with the people of Virginia’s 1st Congressional District.

Your constituents are not fooled, Rob.

Contact Congressman Wittman him at his Mechanicsville office at 804-730-6596, or at his DC office at 202-225-4261 or via email:congressman.wittman@mail.house.gov Tell Rob Wittman that working against the best interests of his constituents and our community is unacceptable.

  • Santana for Congress

Great article. This may actually be good news for Dems. If the Koch Brothers are starting to throw phony awards at Wittman so they can throw cash his way, it means they’re nervous about the outcome of this race. We need to double down on our efforts. Thank you for shining a light on this.

Great article. I’m glad to see Edwin Santana’s comment. Let’s hope all three VA-01 Democratic candidates pile on Wittman about this. Several of us in VA-01 are using this article as fodder for letters to editors across the district. I’ve already called his district offices asking them who he thinks he is kidding!!

    • Speaking of Edwin Santana…

Democrat Santana First to Open Office in Virginia 1st District Primary

Fredericksburg, VA – Edwin Santana’s campaign, responding to the strong demand for a presence in the community and to increase voter outreach, is proud to announce the opening of a new office in downtown Fredericksburg. Santana is the first Democrat to open an office in this race and the candidate promises to continue to apply the same energy to increase voter turnout in the Primary and General elections. The campaign will begin operations at the new space, located at 618 Kenmore Ave, Fredericksburg, VA 22401, this week.

“We want to invite our supporters to join us for an office opening fundraiser and canvass next Sunday, April 22, at 10:00 AM,” said Democratic candidate Edwin Santana. “We’re very excited to launch our operations at the space and we want to thank everyone who’s supported us so we could get this far.”

The campaign plans to launch canvasses, host phone banks and community outreach events from the new location. “Our staff will be working out of the office throughout the week and we encourage supporters to stop by and volunteer,” said campaign manager Ayodele Okeowo. “Our campaign is built on grassroots support so we need everyone to get involved and help grow the movement.”

      • FYI, John Suddarth emailed me: “Hi Lowell,

Just in the interest of the accuracy of your website, I’d like you to know that Suddarth For Congress has had a campaign office at 201 North Washington Highway in Ashland open since April 1, making your headline below not true.

I thought you’d want to know.

And then another email: “Actually I have to make a correction myself! We opened our office on March 1st, not April 1st.”

So it appears that the Suddarth folks had the first Dem campaign office open in VA-01.
