Tim Kaine in New TV Ad: I’m Fighting to Improve Health Care and Protect People With Pre-Existing Conditions

Ad Contrasts Kaine’s Approach With Corey Stewart’s Record of Health Care Cuts in Prince William County

In the latest television ad of his re-election campaign, Senator Tim Kaine focuses on his efforts to reduce health care costs and protect people with pre-existing conditions. “Affordable health care is key to building a Virginia that works for all,” Kaine says in the ad, before comparing his vision of improving and expanding health care with Corey Stewart’s record of overseeing cuts to public health funding in Prince William County. While Kaine has been a leader in proposing new ideas to offer Virginians more health insurance choices at lower prices, Stewart has promised “full repeal” of the Affordable Care Act if he is elected, which would eliminate protections for people with pre-existing conditions, take insurance away from tens of millions of Americans, and threaten Medicaid.

Kaine’s plan, “Medicare X,” would allow all Americans to purchase a health insurance plan similar to Medicare. The plan “would use the Medicare provider network, reimbursement schedule, and low administrative cost to deliver a high-quality product at a reasonable price that could be purchased on the individual insurance exchange,” Kaine and his colleague Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet wrote in a CNN op-ed. Additionally, Kaine stood firmly against the Republicans’ ultimately unsuccessful 2017 attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which would have eliminated many protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions and forced millions off of their insurance.

Under Corey Stewart’s leadership, public health funding in Prince William County was cut 35 percent, even as infectious disease went up. Stewart even proposed “eliminating the county health department” in 2013. If elected, he would support “full repeal” of the Affordable Care Act, and in his Senate campaign, he has called Medicaid expansion “a major disaster” and even said he wants a “full repeal of Medicaid,” threatening coverage for the more than one million Virginians who receive health insurance through the program. “We can’t afford a Senator who will put your health at risk,” Kaine intones as the ad concludes.

The ad, entitled “At Risk,” begins airing Friday in the Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke and Tri-Cities markets as part of a six-figure buy in the following week.

Transcript of ‘At Risk’

I’m Tim Kaine, and I approve this message.

Affordable health care is key to building a Virginia that works for all.

I’m fighting to lower health care costs and protect people with pre-existing conditions.

If elected, Corey Stewart would take health care away from millions and gut Medicaid.

Under his leadership, county public health funding was cut 35 percent, and he even tried to eliminate the entire health department.

We can’t afford a Senator who will put your health at risk.
