Meet the (Gay) Priest that Homophobic Hypocrite Bob McDonnell is Now Living With

by: lowkell

Sun Aug 24, 2014 at 06:41:28 AM EDT

The following story most definitely falls into the "you can't make this s*** up" category. So, you know how Bob McDonnell, now on trial for corruption as governor (and busy throwing his wife under the bus while rolling back and forth over her a few times, proving he's a complete cad as well as a sleazeball), has moved out of his home with Maureen and moved in with a priest (Rev. Wayne Ball of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Richmond)? Well, how about we meet the good Reverend (note: thanks to Ben "Not Larry Sabato" Tribbett for the tip on this one, since he really broke the story).

Yeah, it's this same guy.

The Rev. Wayne L. Ball, a Norfolk priest who pleaded guilty late last year to a misdemeanor sex offense, has been reassigned to St. John's Catholic Church in Highland Springs, according to The Catholic Virginian, a biweekly diocesan newspaper. The move is effective June 2.

Ball, 42, has served as pastor of Norfolk's Holy Trinity Catholic Church since 2000. The current pastor at St. John's, the Rev. David V. McGuire, will replace Ball at Holy Trinity.

In December, Ball pleaded guilty in Norfolk General District Court to the misdemeanor charge of frequenting a bawdy place. Norfolk police arrested Ball and a 41-year-old Richmond man on the night before Thanksgiving in a parked car in a Norfolk park. The judge continued Ball's case until July 8 and will dismiss the charge if the priest has no further criminal problems and completes 80 hours of community service by June 3. The man in the car with Ball received a similar deal.

[...]

Ball will be the second Catholic priest who recently pleaded guilty to a sex crime to serve at St. John's in Highland Springs.

In February, the Rev. John P. Blankenship, who served at St. John's from 1973 to 1977, pleaded guilty in Prince George County to four counts of sodomy. The charges stemmed from incidents that occurred after Blankenship's time at St. John's.

Look, it should go without saying that I have no problem with priests -- or any other religious officials, or anyone else -- being gay, straight, bisexual, transgender, etc. What I DO have a problem with is massive hypocrisy among politicians, such as a guy who richly earned the nickname "Taliban Bob" for his viciously anti-gay rhetoric and actions hounding/harassing LGBT people (not to mention his right-wingnut, theocratic, holier-than-thou, Pat Robertson-trained moralizing about what we all should or should not be doing in the privacy of our own bedrooms; not to mention the fact that when McDonnell himself was asked by reporters if HE had ever violated Virginia's "crimes against nature" laws, he said "not that I can recall").

Anyway, this is the priest - Wayne Ball - who "Homophobe Bob" McDonnell is now living with in a rectory in Richmond. Just when you thought this trial couldn't any more soap opera-ish or bizarre...

P.S. Again, let me just emphasize that I don't have any problem whatsoever with Rev. Ball being gay. I DO have a problem with Bob McDonnell spending his career telling everybody what's right and wrong sexually as well as who they can and can't marry; voting for anti-gay legislation; and generally being a homophobic jerk; and then moving in with a gay priest after moving out with his wife Maureen. Holy hypocrisy alert, Batman!

So-o-o-o-o . . . . (0.00 / 0)
So-o-o-o-o does this mean Governor Rolex is about to come out of the closet, proclaim his gayness, and . . .

Perhaps ir003436's Question (0.00 / 0)
should be directed to the governors former chef at the mansion.  Maybe he might know the answer to that question.

I guess it's another Republican example of "hate the sin, make love with the sinner"?

Maybe he'll try and pull a Larry Craig on us.

Is there an age limit on altar boys?

Wish I Could Be a Fly on Marshall's Wall... (0.00 / 0)
this morning!

Or Cooch's...or Black's...

Hypocrites (0.00 / 0)
None of us really care if the priest who is presently sheltering Bob McDonnell as part of the defense plan to show just how "broken" the McDonnell marriage is happens to be gay or not. All of us should care about the hypocrites - whether Bob McDonnell or the Catholic Church - that rail against homosexuality or corruption but protect those who commit the acts among their own.

McDonnell needs to re-read that so-called "thesis" he wrote for Pat Robertson's school. It speaks of all these family values and "traditional values" that I suppose McDonnell thinks should apply to everyone else except those he decides to exempt from them. The same priest who is vouching for McDonnell's character took a sacred oath of celibacy. If he couldn't keep that oath, he should have left the priesthood. McDonnell made an unwritten pact with the voters of Virginia to represent them - and them alone - as governor. He broke that pact, and I, for one, hope he is found guilty (and Maureen is found innocent by reason of insanity caused by a crush on Jonnie Williams and her terrible temper).

So who is the other priest? (0.00 / 0)
Bob McDonnell has been walking out of court with two priests this week. Who is the other one? See the WAVY 10 video.

Umm, is Fr. Ball in charge of disciplinary cases? (0.00 / 0)
The Catholic Diocese of Richmond has him listed under Diocesan Tribunal as

"Judge and Promoter of Justice for Penal Cases: Rev. Wayne L. Ball J.C.L."

Yes, penal cases. (Insert joke here.)

Equality (0.00 / 0)
Unbelievably, bearingdrift and bullelephant call out lowell and "liberal" commenters for being hypocrites and jokesters instead of reading an entire text. I guess their readers are now the party of equality?  Or does it just suit them in never-ending election cycles to hunt for maybe "macaca" moments? Rove has succeeded in teaching one thing to the GOP; dumb-down information into phrases or sound-bites so they're easier to comprehend and rant about.

REPEAT - "P.S. Again, let me just emphasize that I don't have any problem whatsoever with Rev. Ball being gay. I DO have a problem with Bob McDonnell spending his career telling everybody what's right and wrong sexually as well as who they can and can't marry; voting for anti-gay legislation; and generally being a homophobic jerk; and then moving in with a gay priest after moving out with his wife Maureen."

They're seriously confused... (0.00 / 0)
Although it's hard to believe that, deep down, even they don't see the wild hypocrisy here of a guy (McDonnell) who voted consistently throughout his career for anti-LGBT legislation, advocated for it, went out of his way to persecute a judge who happened to be lesbian, preached to everyone what the "perfect" marriage and family was (answer: HIS!), and now watch that all be exposed as rank hypocrisy in his trial (including where he's chosen to take refuge). Their response says a great deal about them, that's for sure.

Maybe it's wise to steer clear of the jokes, yes?  Or maybe rightwing radio talkers will use one to introduce a candidate?  Thank goodness Virginians aren't spending any more  of our hard-earned tax money defending this former governor. At least I hope not.

I like this:
James Clements - August 25, 2014
"The real enemies of the traditional family (are) materialism, irresponsibility, feminism, lust, and ultimately selfishness." - Bob McDonnell

"We've been told for years by people like Gov. Bob McDonnell that allowing homosexuals to marry would mark the beginning of the end for Virginia's families and their values. Ironically, while we wait for the Supreme Court to rule on gay marriages, McDonnell is doing a fine job of destroying his own."

The hilarious part (0.00 / 0)
Is the suggestion that somehow Democrats in general aren't supporters of gay people. Because, you know, mountains of evidence.

Jeanine is my biggest fan (0.00 / 0)
As you can clearly see.

As for this post, Lowell - the reason you got called out is simple: the guy is letting McDonnell stay with him. So why call him out by name and throw out this information? It's the equivalent of an outing, and I don't understand why the LGBT community hasn't said something to you about it. It's not cool.

This isn't an attack on McDonnell, it's an attack on Father Ball. If anything, it demonstrates that Father Ball actually believes what he preaches - despite McDonnell's stance on gay rights and the like, he's opening up his home to Bob when Bob needs it.

That's something he should be praised for, not having his indiscretion thrown back out into the public domain again so he can be mocked for it (as has happened right here in the comments).

[ Parent ]
How bizarre. (0.00 / 0)
Alternate universe time with Brian Schoeneman...

In reality, of course, all of this was already public knowledge: a) multiple media outlets had already reported that Bob McDonnell was staying with Ball; b) multiple media outlets had already reported on Ball's misdemeanor sex offense; c) Ben Tribbett had already tweeted, "I'm really disappointed in the lack of jokes about Bob McDonnell moving in for the trial with a gay priest.  Easy material guys."  All I did was call out McDonnell for his lifetime of homophobia, and for the hypocrisy/"you can't make this stuff up" quality of McDonnell now staying with a gay priest during his trial. In no way/shape/form do I have anything against Father Ball, nor did I say so in the diary. It's Bob McDonnell I think is a raging hypocrite, just like so many others in the Republican Party.

By the way, the ONLY negative comments about this post that I've seen have been from the RIGHT. Over at Daily Kos, Democratic Underground, and here at Blue Virginia, everyone basically thinks it's the hilarious height of hypocrisy.

[ Parent ]
C'mon now, Lowell (0.00 / 0)
A) Yes, they have, and Father Wayne wrote a blog post about the trial. That's not the point.

B) I've got to bust you on this one. I haven't seen a single media outlet, other than you and Daily Kos, reference this issue. Google "father wayne ball" and the only reference to him in the media is a 2002 post on Free Republic, of all places, that references the citation. A google news search of Wayne Ball comes up with zilch referencing his sexuality.

And even now, google "wayne ball gay" and the only story that comes up is Daily Kos, which is your own post. No media outlets had drawn that connection. The only reason I knew about it ahead of time was we discussed it internally on Bearing Drift because folks were familiar with Father Wayne.

What other media outlets have posted about Father Wayne being gay? I can't even find the original story on the Virginian-Pilot's website.

C) Ben's tweet got exactly 3 retweets and I didn't even see it originally.

You could easily call out McDonnell for being homophobic without having to drag Father Ball out and throwing a spotlight on his sexuality. Why do that? What good did you do? McDonnell's career is already over, and you had to whip out 10 year old nonsense and smear a priest just to get a few more shots in on the guy?

It's sad to me that the only negative comments about this post have been from those on the right. Maybe Kirwin was right and you all don't care about LGBT issues and public shaming.

[ Parent ]
Sorry Brian, McDonnell is Catholic By Convenience (0.00 / 0)
I explained this years ago. And suddenly he is tolerant by convenience.

Cafeteria Catholic; cafeteria Republican; cafeteria conservative; cafeteria family man. McDonnell focused the light on Father Wayne and Lowell simply followed it to him.

His pal Pat Robertson put out the NO VACANCY sign, so Bob sought refuge where he could find it. Misery loves company.

[ Parent ]
I expect more from you guys than this (0.00 / 0)
You're acting like the worst fringe of the Tea Party now. Outing gays, and now you're bashing Bob's religion and questioning, for no real reason, whether he actually believes it or not.

C'mon Brian, where is that from? I can guarantee you I served as an alter boy at more masses than anybody you know.

Personally, I would absolutely defend the priest's (0.00 / 0)
right to be gay, straight, whatever. I also have absolutely no problem with him letting Bob McDonnell stay with him during the trial. My issue, as always, is 100% with McDonnell, nicknamed "Taliban Bob" by Jim Spencer of the Daily Press for his hounding of Newport News Circuit Judge Verbena Aske (for supposedly violating Virginia's "crimes-against-nature law"). Of course, that was just one incident in a long career filled with "family values"-based homophobia, in both word and deed, for Pat Robertson's pal "Bobby." He's a piece of work, no doubt, as are his "dead-ender" defenders.

you Google skills aren't the greatest. Also your reading skills, as I linked to the Richmond Times Dispatch article talking about Wayne Ball, "a Norfolk priest who pleaded guilty late last year to a misdemeanor sex offense." Also see the Free Lance Star and Virginian Pilot (and antoher article from the Virginia Pilot for this story. Again, it was well reported on when it happened, as a simple Google search finds.

As for McDonnell being a hypocrite towards LGBT people, let me spell this out the logic for you slowly so you can understand:

a) McDonnell's whole career has been filled with homophobic attitudes, comments and actions.
b) Now he's living with a gay priest in his time of trial (literally).
c) Ergo, big-time hypocrite.

It's not complicated, unless of course you're trying REALLY hard to make it complicated, and to create something out of nothing.

Finally, as for your beyond-laughable, eminently mockable claims that progressives are secretly anti-LGBT, despite our years of fighting against hate and for full LGBT equality (while your side politically has done the complete, diametric opposite), all I have to say is, hahahahahahahaha. Also: Whatever, dude. Just admit you guys are wrong (and nasty, vicious, Orwellian, ad hominem, etc.), as usual.

not counting the time it takes to click on the link that I PROVIDED in the original article, and reading the block quote from that article that I PROVIDED. The result: anyone can see that the Ball story was well covered when it happened, back in 2003 (of course, since it was the ancient days of 2003, the internet wasn't what it is today, so undoubtedly there are even MORE articles that the several I've already provided that we can find if we keep looking).

Lowell, be honest (1.00 / 1)
A single line in a RTD article is not the same as "multiple media outlets reported on this offense," especially when you're trying to make it seem like this had been a recent story in connection with McDonnell. It wasn't. And pulling out microfiche links to Free Lance Star articles and 10 year old stories behind newspaper archive service paywalls isn't going to win you this argument, either. That's not a simple google search. That's in-the-weeds research, and not something anybody would come across without prompting.

You knew exactly what you were looking for because you'd already seen what Ben wrote. The average person had no idea who Wayne Ball was, other than McDonnell's priest, until you trumped this up and put it in the spotlight. Had you not done that, this decade old charge would have remained in the background and most people wouldn't have known about it.

You can mock what I'm saying all you want, Lowell, but unlike you, I've never outed anybody on the internet in an attempt to score cheap points on a politician whose career is already over.

The only point was to demonstrate that this issue has been covered extensively, whether in the reporting back in 2003 about Ball's arrest, or in the current commentary on McDonnell's hypocrisy. About the only ones who can't comprehend this (or pretending, disingenuously, to not understand something so simple - McDonnell's over-the-top hypocrisy, that is) seem to be a few right-wing bloggers, for some strange reason (gee, can't imagine why not - heh). ;)

What are you talking about Lowell? (1.00 / 1)
Seriously, you have the thinnest skin of anybody I've ever met. Where have I lied?

You made a statement that this story - that Ball is a gay priest and McDonnell is staying with him - was covered by "multiple media outlets" and that's simply not true. The original Ball case was covered by two local media outlets a decade ago when it happened and there's nothing out there since. Unless you went specifically looking for that story, it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

What you did in blowing this story up was the equivalent of forcibly outing the guy after the original story had been forgotten by almost everybody. That's my opinion. It's not a lie, or a troll.

You went after Ball in an attempt to smear McDonnell, and you've got commenters here making jokes about Father Ball. Do you think that kind of thing is okay? If not, just say so.

Stop with the distortion, twisting, slandering or lying nonsense - own up to the fact that this was a bad idea of a story and take some personal responsibility for what you did here.

Let's take this real slow-like. (0.00 / 0)
a) The story that McDonnell is staying with Ball has been covered by multiple media outlets.
b) The story of Ball's arrest for public sex with a man was covered by multiple media outlets (it also would be public record, if I'm not mistaken).
c) Ben Tribbett tweeted to his 6,000+ Twitter followers about the McDonnell staying with a gay priest and how this "Easy material guys" and encouraged everyone to Google it (which I did).
d) Others have also now written about this story, including a prominent LGBT blogger (whose headline is "Disgraced Former Gov. Bob McDonnell Is Now Living With Catholic Priest Busted For Public Gay Sex").

This really isn't that difficult, unless you're trying really hard to make it so.

Again, I didn't "go after Ball in an attempt to smear McDOnnell," I went after McDonnell for his hypocrisy.  That's it. The fact that you're still going on and on about this says a great deal...about you, that is!
