How does the Virgina Constitution work (0.00 / 0)

on a L.G. who ascends to Governor running for the post. Doesn't that technically involve a Governor "succeeding himself"?

"The chief executive power of the Commonwealth shall be vested in a Governor. He shall hold office for a term commencing upon his inauguration on the Saturday after the second Wednesday in January, next succeeding his election, and ending in the fourth year thereafter immediately upon the inauguration of his successor. He shall be ineligible to the same office for the term next succeeding that for which he was elected, and to any other office during his term of service."

The one-term limit only applies to a full term that the governor was elected to, not to a partial term due to succession.

Incidentally, it looks like every Governor since Reconstruction served a full term.

I don't think McDonnell is interested in 2012 VP candidacy (0.00 / 0)

McDonnell has no interest in actually being the GOP candidate in 2012, IMHO, although he is interested in being the presidential candidate in 2016.

I think he would like to be seriously considered for the nomination without actually winning it. This will give him a chance to campaign and get to know GOP operatives in other states and gain some name recognition among Republicans from other parts of the country.

For example, in 1956 JFK's failed bid for the VP position set the stage for his 1960 nomination.

At least, that is what he appears to me to be trying to do.
