Larry Sabato: "Tim Kaine tells a Richmond class he is running for Senate."

by: lowkell

Mon Mar 14, 2011 at 12:43:13 PM EDT

I just saw the news on UVA Professor Larry Sabato's Twitter feed:

"Unconventional announcement: Tim Kaine tells a Richmond class he is running for Senate."

Sabato adds, "Kaine-Allen will be 1 of half-dozen top '12 Senate races. Appears close at starting gate. Who knows what twists and turns contest will take?"

Also, blogger Rick Sincere tweets "Tim Kaine tells UR class he is candidate for US Senator reports WINA."

I'm waiting for more details, confirmation of this news (or should I say "news?"), etc.

UPDATE: @HotlineJosh tweets, "One top adviser in Kaine inner circle: "First I've heard" about Senate "announcement" at URichmond."

UPDATE #2: Peter Hamby of CNN tweets, "@LarrySabato have you verified that? a lot of smart politicos in Virginia have not." Also, "re: Kaine - everyone is citing a tweet that hasn't been confirmed." I'm starting to doubt this story.

UPDATE #3: Jennifer Epstein of Politico tweets, "V[ery] convoluted story on Kaine and #VASEN. UR student called WINA to say two of his friends told him that Kaine told their class he's running." Looking less and less likely by the minute...

UPDATE #4: Reporter Michael Shear tweets, "@larrysabato tweet about Kaine running based on local radio caller, he says. Guy named greg called in to say friends told him kaine running." Hmmmmmm.

UPDATE #5: My god, this is a complete and utter FAIL (not to mention a joke - the rightwing Schilling Show, no less)!

A University of Richmond student has been told that former governor Tim Kaine has said he WILL run for the U.S. Senate. A caller named Greg phoned the Schilling Show on Newsradio 1070 WINA early Monday afternoon and said he has two friends taking the class that Kaine teaches at the UR Jepson School. Kaine reportedly told the class that he will seek the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being left vacant by Jim Webb. Greg says his friends told him that Kaine acknowledged that he has yet to make an official announcement, but he did tell the class that he is running. Kaine teaches the leadership class every Monday at the the Jepson School.
FAIL. FAIL. FAIL. FAIL. FAIL.

UPDATE #6: Reporter Adam Rhew tweets, "DNC out w/ statement on kaine, says comments came in response to a student question, kaine said he's leaning toward a run, no final decision."

UPDATE #7: Here's the DNC press release, courtesy of The Shad Plank blog.

In response to a student's question, Governor Kaine told his law school class today what is already widely known which is that he is increasingly likely to run. However, no final decision will be made or announced until the governor has had a final round of consultations with folks about how he can best serve the President, the people and the causes he cares about; he is assured that the Democratic Party will be in good hands should he choose to make the race and leave the DNC; he has the support that would be necessary to mount a successful campaign and he completes commitments for travel and fundraising he has made to the Party and the President through at least the end of the month.

Perhaps Mr. Sabato (0.00 / 0)
should check and confirm sources before tweeting.

There is real news here (0.00 / 0)
Namely, the fact that DNC confirms Kaine said he was leaning toward a run.

I, for one, am tired of Kaine's procrastination. (4.00 / 1)
He needs to poo or get off the pot, as my grandmother would have said.

[ Parent ]
Perhaps... (0.00 / 0)
he is merely honing his filibustering skills. :)

[ Parent ]
Ahh, so now we have another (0.00 / 0)
open-ended time table.  I repeat, Poo or get off the pot, Mr. Kaine.

[ Parent ]
Sounds like he's running (0.00 / 0)
The question is whether there's any advantage to him getting going early, or is it smarter to slow things down a bit. I'd probably vote for the latter, just looking at it strategically...

Yeah, I'm with you on that (0.00 / 0)

Then again (0.00 / 0)
is anyone looking forward to a 20-month campaign for Senator?

Thankfully next year, Dems can sit back and watch the Republicans maul each other for the Presidential nomination.  But as far as I'm concerned, the longer we hold off the start of festivities in VA, the better.  There's plenty of fish to fry with redistricting and the state and local elections this November.

That's not "real news" (0.00 / 0)
We've known Kaine's been "leaning toward a run" for weeks now.

True, but... (0.00 / 0)
That's been the "talk" of various anonymous sources.

The difference here is that it is an official comment from the DNC about where Kaine is at.

The real news is the word "increasingly" (0.00 / 0)

It seems that Kaine has been waiting for someone to give him an excuse NOT to run. (4.00 / 1)
Now that he has been assured that the DNC will be in good (better ?) hands if he gives up his cushy paid travel job to run for Senate, there is no longer any legitimate reason for him to stall another month to honor travel, fund raising or other prior commitments while he has another round of "consultations". There's nothing left for him to consult about with anyone.

If this is how he made executive decisions - i.e., by procrastination/indecision - when he was governor, it's no wonder he didn't accomplish much. I shudder to think how long it's going to take him to decide who to hire to (not) run his Senatorial campaign, when/where to open his regional campaign offices and who to hire to manage them, etc., etc. He is giving George Allen too much ammo. to claim (probably correctly) that Kaine would have to consult with too many people before ever deciding on how to vote on a bill before the senate. I though if he finally announced a decision to run he would open a campaign office in the NoVa area so I could sign up to start working on his campaign. Now I don't think he's going to do that anytime this year, at the snail-pace rate that he makes important decisions, and I'm not about to drive to Richmond to beg for campaign lit. so I can start helping from my NoVa home turf. If he does open a campaign office in Richmond by summer, I will drive to Richmond to try to speak with him or his campaign manager (if he even has one by then) and offer suggestions about who he should hire to find, lease and run a NoVa campaign office.

It is too incredible that Kaine would be discussing his decision with a law class before he has made a firm decision (which I suspect he has by now) and announced his decision publicly. I think the point made by another commenter is spot-on: he is making it look like he is practicing his filibuster skills by filibustering his own decision-making process. What he REALLY needs to be practicing is is decision-making and public relations skills.

think strategically (0.00 / 0)
Just because Kaine hasn't announced his decision publicly doesn't mean that he hasn't made a decision to run. Dominic's point below is worth noting.  There are a million reasons why it makes sense to NOT announce now.  If he's not going to run - then sure - say you're not going to run and move on. But if you ARE going to run - what's the benefit to making a deal right now? Instead - make sure everything is tied off, marshal your forces - and blow an announcement out of the water.

[ Parent ]
Yeah, I'm increasingly thinking that this (4.00 / 1)
is exactly what's going on. I sure hope so, because as much as I'm not a huge Tim Kaine fan, I definitely DO want to keep this Senate seat blue!

Yes, and (0.00 / 0)
It is increasingly painful to watch the increasingly labored indecisiveness, which is increasingly giving me motiosickness (just kidding about the motionsickness).  This is because it is beginnging to sound like labor.  And we know (or half us who are older than childbearing age know) what that is like.  If it takes so much agony only to find the "delivery" is months of being away from home, perhaps Tim doesnt really want this job.  Otherwise the decision would not be increasingly laborious.

There's nothing in the middle of the road except yellow stripes and dead armadillos (Jim Hightower). PS I'm on Twitter here.

[ Parent ]
My guess it that he's made the decision to run (0.00 / 0)
and is just waiting until after the first quarter filing deadline to announce. In the end, what's the rush for Kaine to announce? He'll have no problem raising money, he's got nearly 100% name ID, and normal people aren't really focused on the 2012 election yet. I'm actually starting to think that, strategically, it makes sense for Kaine to wait as long as he can to announce his candidacy!

I'm going to throw this out there (4.00 / 3)
I'm sure Tim Kaine is giving this a lot of thought and is probably leaning towards a run as everyone is saying.

This is my pure speculation, but maybe he isn't announcing at this moment because there is a finance deadline at the end of this month - both for the DNC and a possible Senate campaign.  It makes more sense to try and finish strong at the DNC and then announce for Senate in early April - which gives him a couple of weeks to recruit some good staff to start fundraising immediately and strong, and not botch an announcement, a la Newt Gingrich.

As Joe Stanley pointed out on twitter - TimKaine.com redirects to the Cooches website and KaineforSenate.com is taken by a squatter.  Rolling out campaigns in this 24/7 news cycle takes some planning, and it looks like Governor Kaine and his people need to get ahead on the preparation before any announcement.

And just throwing this out there, as well (0.00 / 0)
He might just be holding off until a successor is settled upon for his job at the DNC, so that doesn't turn into a distraction.

Cillizza had a rundown today of possible replacements in this morning's WP:

I think Harris Miller... (0.00 / 0)
should run ... then this Senate race would be all so RETRO.
