DPVA Chair Brian Moran's Group Has George W. Bush Speaking at Its Upcoming Convention

by: lowkell

Fri Apr 20, 2012 at 17:51:35 PM EDT

Man, do we ever need a change in "leadership" at the Democratic Party of Virginia. Check this out:
In one life, Brian Moran leads the Democratic Party of Virginia, and will be at the DPVA State Convention in June. Two weeks later, he will flip to his other life as an executive for the for-profit college industry at their convention- and check out who he will be hanging out with there...

Not a big surprise given the Politico article that said Brian was taking instructions on legislative strategy from Eric Cantor's office.

That's right, Brian Moran will be hanging out with George W. Bush, whose "Administration's deliberate actions made it easier for bad actors among for-profit schools to engage in a decade of waste, fraud, and abuse that has earned them billions in profits but has left many former students deep in debt and without job prospects." As I've said before, just imagine the head of the Republican Party of Virginia simultaneously leading the AFL-CIO, Greenpeace, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, or NARAL? Right, it's impossible to imagine, because it would never happen. But Democrats? Sure, we're fine with our chair simultaneously heading up - now he's back to being "only" Executive Vice President, Government Relations and General Counsel - a group that systematically scams the taxpayer, rips off the government, and harms the lives of veterans, minorities and poor people. Yeah, sure, it works for me! (snark) How about you?

DPVA, a criminal enterprise (0.00 / 0)

DPVA's not a "criminal enterprise," but... (0.00 / 0)
...the for-profit "college" industry most certainly is. And Brian Moran is a top executive at the for-profit "college" industry's top lobby shop in Washington, DC.  So what does that make Brian Moran? Hmmmmm.

This is ridiculous (0.00 / 0)
We need leaders who are in touch with the grassroots and appeal to the people -- not inside-the-Beltway influence-peddlers hobnobbing with the 1%.

A DPVA that is this clueless will hand the state on a silver platter to Governor Cuccinelli. We can't let that happen.

So..... (0.00 / 0)
...what are you/we going to do about it?  It's great to say "we can't let that happen," but HOW are we going to not "let that happen" exactly?

Easy, DO NOT SUPPORT a criminal enterprise. (0.00 / 0)
Abandon the DPVA

Are any of you members of local Democratic committees? (0.00 / 0)
Can't really do anything about it unless you are a member of a committee.

How many will attend the DPVA convention?

I'll be at the DPVA convention. (0.00 / 0)
Unfortunately, there's no vote scheduled to replace Brian Moran. Any other ideas?

It's about more than Brian Moran (0.00 / 0)
We need to vote for grassroots leadership -- or at least leaders who get it -- at every level of the party.  It may not lead to immediate change at the top but it will help create the wave of change to sweep the party hacks aside in favor of a generation that fights for progressive values, rather than for the values of all their country club partners.

Are you going to be at the DPVA convention (0.00 / 0)
in early June?  There will be a chance to vote for Virginia's DNC reps, and one who's got to go is corrupt bigot Lionell Spruill.

The movement for Brian's removal should start on the 1st of June. (4.00 / 1)
Due to the 2nd of June Presidential Nominating Convention at GMU Patriot Center, the regular full quarterly meetings that include the Central Committee meeting was delayed until Sept. But the Steering Committee will meet Friday evening the 1st of June. While the Steering Committee, if it so chooses, can only recommend removal of the chair to the full Central Committee, the members of the Steering Committee can bring some private pressure on Brian to step down "voluntarily" for the "good of the party". Not that Brian gives a damn about the "good of the party", but with this latest revelation about Brian's extremely unethical conflict of interest issues I'd hope (maybe even expect) that a few of the most powerful SC members might find some way to convince Brian to resign after the convention adjourns. He has to know that this series of increasingly unsettling revelations will result in some very open demands for his removal at the Sept. quarterly meetings. If Brian can be made to understand how outraged the Central Committee members are becoming with him it might be possible for someone to make him understand how embarrassing it would be for him to be fired for cause by the full Central Committee.

One among us (Dave) is now a new Central Committee member and therefore has an official voice in favor of strong ethical standards to be enforced for the chair. I am sure there are many other Central Committee members, many long-serving, who will speak very openly in favor of removal both during the Steering Committee meeting (Fri. eve.) and the Central Committee meeting (Sat. morning) in Sept.

So, I think the "first shot across the bow" the evening of the 1st of June is our best shot at starting the movement toward Sept. removal. I'm now officially confirmed as a 2 June delegate, and as soon as I've pre-registered and picked up my delegate credentials on shortly after 4 P.M. Friday the 1st of June, I will start lobbying immediately with all the Steering Committee members I know for them to begin the dialogue with Brian before and after the SC meeting that evening.

The problem is, Brian has a LOT of enablers (0.00 / 0)
and people who have an irrational, misguided "loyalty" to him. The question is, will those people wake up and smell the coffee, or will they continue to block needed change at DPVA?

So if Brian resigns (0.00 / 0)
who fills the spot?  I keep hearing a lot of people saying that Brian should step down, but I haven't heard of a single viable alternative to him.

Tom Perriello? (4.00 / 1)

Painful (0.00 / 0)
Pushing Tom into the DPVA slot would be cruel and inhumane punishment for him. It's too confining of a position and wouldn't give him the leeway he desires in politics.

We need a trustworthy partisan who can make the trains run on time, so to speak, and who can just avoid these "unforced errors" that Moran's background keeps producing.

Better yet (0.00 / 0)
support your Delegate and State Senator, not the DPVA. Let this creature die on the vine. This is a top down organization and we need a bottom up.

[ Parent ]
What Does That Do? (0.00 / 0)
Are you suggesting that somehow the DPVA has problems, but the Delegates and State Senators are not part of the problem too? Pretty sure posts criticism Saslaw are common around here, and he's a creature of the State Senators too. We've certainly seen criticisms of Colgan recently too. And didn't a significant number of the House caucus vote for the Republican budget?

The Undead (0.00 / 0)
Will the guy bring along his undead friend?

Mere parsimony is not economy. Expense, and great expense, may be an essential part in true economy.
Edmund Burke

Why not demonstrate (0.00 / 0)
There could be a demonstration at the convention (with signs, etc.). I know the Republicans would eat it up, but it might be worth it simply for the embarrassment factor. The only problem is I think Brian is far past the stage of being able to be embarrassed.

The DPVA is a private organization (0.00 / 0)
Like all other political parties in the United States, the DPVA is a private organization.  It is very difficult to alter the course of an organization like DPVA by just complaining from the outside (though I do my fair share of that as well).

To make lasting change we need to join our local committees and pack them with good progressives.  Most committees are dying for new members, so it would require recruiting a relatively small number of progressives per committee to install a "safety valve" to protect against another Brian Moran.

The Richmonder

The problem is, most progressive activists don't appear (0.00 / 0)
interested in joining their local parties (at least as far as I've seen). And unless hundreds of Virginia progressives do that, and soon, the strategy of taking over the party - let alone ousting its Chair, who has overwhelming backing from the Central and Steering Committees - won't succeed. I guess the question is, how do you suggest getting Virginia progressives interested in getting involved with their local parties? Then, if they do, how do they quickly move up the ranks?
