Find out how Ken Cuccinelli's not just a tinfoil-hat, John Birch Society-style, extremist wackjob, he's also corrupt, in the The Continuing Chronicle of Ken Cuccinelli's Corruption. It really stinks!

Mudcat: GOTV will Let Obama, Kaine Prevail in Virginia

by: aznew

Mon Oct 29, 2012 at 22:14:44 PM EDT

I caught Mudcat being interviewed this morning on MSNBC by Chuck Todd.

The entire interview was not particularly interesting. Todd is a generic television political analyst who tends to base his reporting on the conventional wisdom, occasionally channeling the analysis of the last political operative to plant an idea in his brain (lately, he seems to have developed a good source in the Romney camp, based on his reporting). Both of those skills were on display for the majority of his chat with Mudcat. Meh.

Mudcat did explain that he did not see the Commonwealth as a "purple" state, but rather still as a "red" state, based on the makeup of the General Assembly. At a local state level, he is without doubt correct (and it must look extremely red from his perch down there in Roanoke), but thanks to continuing demographic changes and a growing urban population, particularly in NOVA, the picture is not quite as clear on a statewide basis. It is now possible for Democrats to statewide elections without attracting significant numbers of "independents" to its side.

Indeed, at the very end of the interview, Todd asked about the whether Democrats could offset losing that "independent" vote in the Commonwealth (which Todd sited in the Southern D.C. suburbs, the Northern Neck, and the more rural areas of Hampton Roads), and Mudcat had an interesting response:

aznew :: Mudcat: GOTV will Let Obama, Kaine Prevail in Virginia
There's something else at work here in Virginia that people don't talk about. The best GOTV guy in the history of the Commonwealth is Mike Henry, and he's out there working with Tim Kaine. And I can promise you they are out there. And you've got a double GOTV effort going on between Obama and Kaine. And I think they will prevail.

Yep. That's Mudcat, saying the Democrats will win by turning out Democrats, not by attracting conservatives -- er, independents, to their side.

(The full interview can be seen here.)

GOTV, at Best, Is a Push This Year (4.00 / 1)
This is not the OFA of 2008 and RPV has stolen the march on DPVA with social media and technology.

The Democratic advantage is the Republican disadvantage: cold fish candidates.

Depends on location... (0.00 / 0)
Just how effective the GOTV effort is depends on the demographics of location. That is to say, for example, the city of Roanoke is getting an enormous GOTV effort from the Kaine/Obama campaigns, far outpacing the GOP. However, in a county like Botetourt County or the city of Salem, where spending lots of money and effort would not result in a bigger vote total than 2008, there has not been wasted effort. Indeed, the Romney camp has been focusing on the 6th and the 9th districts because they are assured of a strong majority GOP vote there. The good news - for the Obama campaign - is that the 6th and 9th are an ever decreasing percentage of the total Virginia voting population.

As for the DPVA. well, they are outpaced by just about any group. Heck, they are doing the little they are doing because of money funneled to them by the DNC.

I hear that DPVA closed yesterday and today.... (0.00 / 0)
...even though Richmond received little to no damage from Sandy. With 7 days to go until a crucial election, DPVA has its priorities...up its butt. I can't wait until 11/7, when I hear we're going to have everyone at DPVA (and I sure hope that includes Brian Moran!) tendering their resignations.

FYI, folks at DPVA have let told me this is not true (0.00 / 0)
and that they WERE open yesterday, as well as today.

Neck and Neck GOTV Until Election Day (0.00 / 0)
But OFA has not been forthcoming with specifics coordinating work at the polls and I am concerned that means there is nothing there. In fact, the correspondence from OFA has obfuscated every detail.

The Republican plan for the 6th, the 9th and elsewhere is to herd every colorless guy aged 45 to 65 to vote aided by data collection at the polls determining those who have not turned out in real time.

My experience with OFA locally (0.00 / 0)
I personally have been doing data entry of info at OFA headquarters in Roanoke, where voter ID, etc., began months and months before the Romney people had any presence. (The first meeting I attended was almost two years ago.) Granted the GOPers learned from 2008 in Virginia...but so did OFA  :-)

My concern is that power loss in NoVA will impact the GOTV effort, but that will impact the GOP equally.

[ Parent ]
Power outages is actually pretty low inNOVA (0.00 / 0)
Considering.  About 9% of NOVA customers are still impacted (78,000 of 834,000 customers) and it looks pretty concentrated so that they can get crews in and get people up and running.

[ Parent ]
OFA doesn't handle the polls (0.00 / 0)
That's a responsibility of the local Dem committee.

[ Parent ]
OFA Told Local Committees They Had the Polls (0.00 / 0)
That's a large part of the problem. They said they were going to handle all the lawyers and the observers collecting voter data inside the polls for the GOTV effort. So the use of local resources would not be an issue.

Now, the old standard 'the local commttees handle the polls' is being waved. But OFA has hijacked the resources.

The information provided local committees has been malleable...translate unreliable.

[ Parent ]
Reason (0.00 / 0)
The reason OFA told local committees in certain areas was that the local committees had a lousy track record of providing observers inside the polls. Some local committees are strong...some are very weak.
