Cuccinelli would be a Governor for Santorum, not for Virginia

Richmond, VA - Democratic Party of Virginia Chair Charniele Herring released the following statement today responding to former Senator Rick Santorum's endorsement of Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli for Governor:

"Rick Santorum doesn't endorse candidates because he agrees with their jobs plan. He endorses candidates who share his divisive ideological preoccupation with attacking women's health care rights and putting his own personal political agenda ahead of what's best for the state he serves.

"It may not be surprising that Rick Santorum wants Ken Cuccinelli to be our next Governor, but  it is disappointing that instead of focusing on jobs and the economy, Cuccinelli continues to run on issues that have nothing to do with making life better for Virginia families."

Santorum attacked equal pay for equal work

Rick Santorum: "Radical feminists have been making the pitch that justice demands that men and women be given an equal opportunity to make it to the top in the workplace." [Santorum, It Takes A Family]

Rick Santorum voted multiple times against legislation to provide the same insurance coverage for contraception as men have for Viagra.  [Vote 75, 3/17/05,  Vote 45, 3/11/03]

Santorum attacked contraceptives

"Many of the Christian faith have said, well, that's okay, contraception is okay. It's not okay. It's a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be." - Rick Santorum [Speaking with, 10/18/11]

Santorum said single moms are causing country's fabric to fall apart

"We are seeing it. We are seeing the fabric of this country fall apart, and it's falling apart because of single moms." - Rick Santorum [02/1994]

NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Rips Santorum Endorsement of Cuccinelli (0.00 / 0)
                        DECEMBER 14, 2012

Both men determined to restrict women's rights and block access to reproductive health care

Today, former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is set to endorse Ken Cuccinelli for Virginia governor.  According to a copy of the endorsement obtained by The Washington Post, Santorum will praise Cuccinelli for his supposed commitment to "working to reform state government to improve quality and access in health care." In addition, Santorum will honor Cuccinelli's controversial opposition to Obama's Affordable Care Act:  "As Virginia's Attorney General, Ken has been a steadfast fighter to overturn ObamaCare and return healthcare decisions back to patients and doctors."

Tarina Keene, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia, released the following statement on Santorum's upcoming endorsement.

"Rick Santorum is as extreme as it gets. He has repeatedly demonstrated a complete disregard for women's health and rights, from his crusade against birth control to his fight to ban access to abortion for rape victims. It comes as no surprise that he would endorse Cuccinelli, who as Attorney General has shown a similar contempt for the rights of Virginian women."

"That Santorum is praising Cuccinelli for improved access to health care would be funny - if it weren't so outrageously false," Keene continued. "Cuccinelli has spent virtually his entire term as Attorney General attempting to block access to reproductive health care and keep thousands of Virginian women from receiving the medical services they need. Furthermore, Ken Cuccinelli has pursued an extreme ideological agenda that does nothing but insert government into personal healthcare decisions best left to a women and her doctor. The hypocrisy is ridiculous."

Scott Statement on Shooting in Newtown, Connecticut

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott, Ranking Democratic Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security, issued the following statement on the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

"Our schools, and especially our elementary schools, are meant to be sanctuaries of peace and safety. Words alone cannot describe the anguish of this shocking tragedy that the community of Newtown, Connecticut and our entire nation are feeling at this moment. My thoughts and prayers are with all the students, parents, and teachers of Sandy Hook Elementary."

"In the near future, we need to review all the recent mass shootings to ascertain what can be done to prevent these types of senseless tragedies from happening."
