An Unfit President

As everyone presumably now knows, the New York Times published on Wednesday an op/ed by an anonymous “senior official” in the Trump administration.

At one level, the portrait of President Trump presented in this op/ed merely confirmed what any perceptive American already knew. (Confirmed also the portraits painted by books like Wolff’s Fire and Fury and Woodward’s Fear.)

But at another level, the very fact of this public message from such a “senior official” is shocking, ringing like an alarm to warn the American people, and perhaps to call upon Congress to do its job to protect the nation.

The column identified “the root of the problem” as “the president’s amorality,” declaring him unmoored to any principles. It described his “leadership style” as “impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective.” The anonymous official describes the President in meeting as veering off topic, engaging in “repetitive rants,” and impulsively coming up with “half-baked, ill-informed and occasionally reckless decisions…”

And then we are told that “Given the instability many witnessed, there were early whispers within the cabinet of invoking the 25th Amendment.”

In other words, many in the best position to know have judged Donald Trump to be unfit for the office of the Presidency, and a danger to the nation.

Corker’s Comment as Conclusive Testimony to the Need for a Blue Wave

On the day of the publication of this op/ed, Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) commented: “‘This is what all of us have understood to be the situation from Day One.”

“All of us” in Congress – apparently, Republicans and Democrats alike – have understood all along that this President is a danger to the nation. But far from protecting the nation, the Republicans have used their control of Congress to protect this dangerously unfit President.

(And meanwhile Senator Ben Sasse [R-NE] described that portrait as “really troubling, and yet in a way, not surprising.”)

Now, wouldn’t it be possible to combine those elements – the portrait from the op/ed, and video of Corker telling us that he and his colleagues all understand how Donald Trump’s being President endangers the nation – into an effective ad (to run across the nation) to highlight the utter irresponsibility, the unpatriotic abdication of duty, of the Republican Party?

Don’t these provide, in other words, the ingredients for a message to help voters recognize the urgent need for a Blue Wave to transfer power from the Republicans to the Democratic Party?
