VA-SEN: Tim Kaine for Virginia Senate Announcement Video

0
Five weeks ago today, DNC Chair and former Virginia Governor Tim Kaine promised the DNC he'd announce his Virginia senate plans within a week (as reported by the AP's Charles Babington).

Yes, Tim Kaine promised he wouldn't run for Senate from Virgina. Of course, Tim Kaine also said he wouldn't run for DNC Chair.

But the wait is over, THE Tim Kaine for US Senate in Virginia 2012 announcement video.

George Allen and Jamie Radtke should be shivering so much it looks like they're doing the Monster Mash.

Detailed State Senate District Data

Note: this diary was originally posted by TXObserver over at SwingStateProject, and I felt that because it was relevant I would cross-post it here. TXObserver compiled Obama/McCain numbers for the senate districts under the Howell plan (the official text of the plan only provides McDonnell/Deeds numbers). The diary contains a .drf file of the districts that can be used in Dave's Redistricting App. For those that don't know, Dave's Redistricting App is a free web-based application that allows you to draw your own redistricting maps, complete with census data. -drobertson

Corey Stewart Can Dish It Out, But…

0
He clearly can't take it.
Babur Lateef, the Democratic candidate running for chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, has a video on YouTube calling out current Republican Chairman Corey A. Stewart.

The video, which Stewart called "cute," seeks to lay the blame for underwater mortgages, high unemployment, low teacher salaries, higher class sizes and lower home prices at Stewart's feet.

[...]

Michael McLaughlin, Lateef's campaign manager, said it's entirely appropriate to bring up facts as they relate to economics, employment, taxes  and education in the county.

"Corey Stewart's asking to be reelected this year based on what he's been doing over the last five years," McLaughlin said. "I think the facts are clear that in the last five years, Prince William County families have been hurting."

"We think that instead of whining to Richmond insiders about why it's not his fault, Corey Stewart needs to get to work helping families in Prince William," he said.

This is going to be a fun campaign. Go Dr. Lateef!

Question:  What's worse than lifting the ban on a radioactive industry in Virginia?

Answer:  Lifting the ban on the radioactive industry if they have no plan to contain the radioactive waste their industry produces.

I know it may seem crazy but, that's the scenario that could play out if Virginia were to lift a near 30-year ban on uranium mining during the 2012 legislative session.  According to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests which uncovered emails between Walter Coles, Sr of Virginia Uranium, Inc. and Peter Pommerenk, Ph.D who works for the city of Virginia Beach.

Virginia Uranium, Inc. is pushing to have Virginia's existing ban on uranium mining lifted and has a 2012 legislative session target date for achieving this goal.  In the meantime, the National Academies of Sciences, Danville Regional Foundation, Chmura Analytics and the city of Virginia Beach are studying the effects uranium mining would have on portions of the state.

The key word here is "portions." The Virginia Beach study is looking at downstream impacts of uranium mining on the water supply while the other studies are all studying the impacts on Southside Virginia.  It's from Virginia Beach's efforts to study the safety of uranium mining that these emails originated.
