MTV launched 30 years ago today with this video, The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.” But 30 years later, while music videos are barely seen on MTV, replaced by reality TV, radio is still doing OK (overly reliant on monolithic corporately-programmed music and mindless political chat, but OK). Music videos survive today not because of MTV, but because of YouTube.
