FACT CHECK: Haley Touts SC’s Economic Progress Under Obama

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley just praised the economic progress South Carolina’s seen under President Obama’s leadership. As she said, American manufacturers are on the rise, adding jobs for the first time since the 1990s. And as she’s said before, her state and nation’s economic growth is “on the right track.” Unfortunately for Mitt Romney, her view is at odds with his pattern of talking down the economy.

GOV. NIKKI HALEY’S OFFICE TOUTED GROWTH IN SOUTH CAROLINA’S MANUFACTURING SECTOR

Haley: South Carolina’s Economic Development Efforts Are “On The Right Track.” “SEW-Eurodrive will expand its manufacturing facility in Lyman. The company will add a new line to produce industrial gears, which are used for heavy lifting applications. The company's Lyman facility was initially opened in 1983 and has been expanded since then. ‘When our manufacturers, like SEW-Eurodrive, choose to grow operations in South Carolina, we know we're on the right track in our economic development efforts. We're going to celebrate the company's decision to invest $20 million and create 40 new, well-paying jobs in Spartanburg County,’ said Gov. Nikki Haley.”  [South Carolina Department Of Commerce press release, 5/31/12]

Haley: “Word Is Out All Over The Globe That South Carolina Is The Place To Do Business.” “Spain-based Gonvarri Steel Services will construct a new greenfield facility for steel processing and supply Gestamp’s facility, which is also located in Union County. It will have a flat steel products processing capacity of 100,000 tons. Operations are expected to begin at the new facility in July 2013. ‘With investments like this one from Gonvarri Steel Services, word is out all over the globe that South Carolina is the place to do business. We celebrate the company’s decision to invest $35 million and create 40 new jobs in Union County. This announcement is also a win for one of our state’s rural areas,’ said Gov. Nikki Haley.” [Gonvarri Steel Services press release, 7/25/12]

April 2012: South Carolina Hit Its Lowest Unemployment In More Than Three Years. “South Carolina’s job market continued to gain momentum in March, as the unemployment rate dropped below 9 percent for the first time since late 2008. The jobless rate fell to 8.9 percent from 9.1 percent the previous month, according to S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce figures released Friday, marking the eighth straight month of declines. [The State, 4/21/12]

New York Times: “[Until 2010] There Had Not Been A Single Year When Manufacturing Employment Rose Since 1997.” “When the Labor Department reports December employment numbers on Friday, it is expected that manufacturing companies will have added jobs in two consecutive years. Until last year, there had not been a single year when manufacturing employment rose since 1997.” [New York Times, 1/5/12]
