Eileen Bedell: Common Sense on Guns

Eileen Bedell, Democratic candidate for the 7th District congressional seat, is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment to our Constitution. She understands and supports the right of all law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms. Unlike her opponent, Dave Brat, however, Bedell believes that we can take reasonable steps to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals, domestic abusers, those dangerously mentally ill and potential terrorists without affecting the gun-rights of others.

Dave Brat has suggested that anyone who proposes universal background checks, the closing of loopholes, or barring potential terrorists from getting guns “sadly misunderstands our fundamental right to keep and bear arms.” Brat’s position means that he believes that the Second Amendment deprives our society of the ability to protect ourselves and our children from gun violence.

For Eileen, however, it’s a matter of common sense. We need background checks for all gun purchases. We should have no loopholes. If purchasers can’t pass a background check at Walmart or a gun store, they shouldn’t be able to buy a weapon at a gun show.

Bedell also believes we can develop a common sense mechanism, akin to no-fly lists in the airline industry, to keep suspected terrorists from acquiring weapons. As a lawyer, she knows that the mechanism must have a provision to protect the due process rights of persons erroneously placed on the suspected terrorist list. But, unlike Dave Brat, Eileen Bedell knows that the Second Amendment does not block us from keeping guns out of the hands of potential terrorists.
