350.org Founder and Environmentalist Bill McKibben Endorses Tom Perriello for Virginia Governor

McKibben Praises Perriello’s Commitment to Stand Up to Fossil Fuel Development and Utilities That Lock Virginia into Outdated Thinking on Energy

Today, prominent environmental activist and founder of 350.org Bill McKibben is endorsing Tom Perriello in his Democratic primary campaign for governor of Virginia. McKibben praises Tom for rejecting campaign contributions from the state’s largest publicly-regulated utility corporation, Dominion, and pressing for bold change on renewable and clean energy.

“Tom Perriello, for the first time in Virginia’s political history, has stood up to Dominion Energy,” said Bill McKibben. “That’s a smart move – what the politically-connected utility wants to do is lock the Commonwealth into a future of pipelines and power plants, even as the energy landscape is changing fast in the direction of renewables. This kind of foresight bodes well for his chances to lead Virginia on many other fronts as governor.”

In his campaign, Tom has clearly opposed two proposed fracked-gas pipelines in Virginia – the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the Mountain Valley Pipeline – and called for a dramatic shift to clean, renewable energy. He has also rejected campaign contributions from Dominion, the largest contributor to either political party in Virginia, and challenged the corporation to win him over with the quality of their ideas, not the size of their political donations. He has also said he would stand up to the Trump administration’s disastrous energy agenda that threatens Virginia’s coastlines, the Chesapeake Bay, and clean air and water across the Commonwealth.

“We stand at a defining moment in Virginia, where we can double down on rusty old ideas like fossil fuel pipelines and monopolies or embrace the next generation of jobs in clean energy and distributive power,” said Tom Perriello. “Our agenda gives Virginians a real choice of better jobs while saving our vulnerable coastline and protecting clean air and water against attacks by Donald Trump and Republicans in Washington and Richmond. As Bill knows, climate change is an existential threat for Virginia and our planet, and as governor, I’ll work hand-in-hand with advocates and experts to put our Commonwealth at the front of clean energy development in America.”
