Delegate Guzman Calls Out Racist And Sexist Inside NoVa Editorial
WOODBRIDGE Va. – Delegate Elizabeth Guzman today issued the following statement on yesterday’s editorial from Inside NoVa:
“We need to name things for what they are. Inside NoVa published a racist and sexist editorial that dismisses and disparages the experience and accomplishments of three women of color while failing to apply the same review of men seeking statewide offices. This visceral hatred of women of color, whether cloaked as a cohesive editorial or incoherently blasted from Donald Trump’s Twitter account, is equally as ugly.
“But this deeply-rooted contempt of marginalized communities is most devastating not in words themselves, but in the actions of those who speak them. Donald Trump has put children in cages who look like mine. Police murdered George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain and countless other Black men and women for the color of their skin. And over the course of my 17-year career in human services serving marginalized communities, I have deeply felt the impact of a Republican-controlled legislature that has failed to provide adequate funding for our schools and other essential services. They know who will be most hurt by those cuts, when social workers like me have to do more with less. We are expendable. My community is expendable.
“I could spend all day trying to convince this editorial board of my qualifications, but you can’t make someone see what they don’t want to see. The good news is I don’t need to prove myself to Inside NoVa. I need to prove myself to the people of Virginia whom I have been fighting for my entire career. I believe the office of Lieutenant Governor is a promotion. I will make my case to Virginians and work hard to earn their vote.
