From the Democratic Party of Virginia:
Glenn Youngkin’s Extreme Views Threaten Reproductive Rights in Virginia
Glenn Youngkin must immediately answer whether he would put in place state-level protections for Roe v. Wade
Richmond, VA — The Supreme Court’s decision to take up a case posing a clear threat to abortion rights is yet another urgent reminder that once again, reproductive rights are on the ballot in Virginia. With the Supreme Court considering overturning Roe v. Wade and states like Texas passing some of the most draconian abortion restrictions anywhere in the country, Virginia’s next governor must be one who will protect reproductive rights. Glenn Youngkin has already made it clear he won’t.
As stated yesterday by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia Executive Director Jamie Lockhart:
“Glenn Youngkin’s nomination “sends a clear message: Republicans in Virginia want to undo the work we have done to ensure access to reproductive health care…Our rights are at stake if Glenn Youngkin becomes governor.”
Youngkin is running on an extreme, hardline opposition to reproductive rights, even emphasizing that “he will oppose laws that allow women to seek abortions.” Just this morning, Youngkin was asked about the prospects of the Supreme Court gutting abortion rights and refused to say a single word in defense of Roe v. Wade. Instead, Youngkin doubled down on his hardline opposition to reproductive freedoms.
“With reproductive health care and abortion rights under attack nationwide, Glenn Youngkin’s extreme positions pose a grave risk to Virginians,” said Manuel Bonder, DPVA spokesman. “Youngkin needs to tell Virginians whether he’d sign a state-level protection for Roe v. Wade into law immediately. Anything less is yet another demonstration that his far-right agenda is too extreme for Virginia.”
