Glenn Youngkin is Helping Donald Trump Threaten American Democracy
Richmond, VA — As Donald Trump continues to advance dangerous election conspiracy theories, his hand-picked candidate for governor of Virginia is helping him threaten American democracy. Glenn Youngkin has based his entire campaign on an “election integrity task force” designed to advance Trump’s Big Lie, which he calls the “most important issue” in this campaign. Youngkin spent months lying about the 2020 election and is committed to the hardline Republican agenda of restricting voting rights.
Now, as Republicans across the country fully embrace Donald Trump’s conspiracy theories and push forward with draconian voter suppression bills, Youngkin is fully on board. This weekend, as Trump repeated his lie that the 2020 election was stolen, Glenn Youngkin was reiterating his commitment to Republican election reforms and “election integrity.”
As national Republicans double down on Trump’s dangerous conspiracies, the GOP threat to American democracy is growing. “Our entire democracy is now at risk,” concluded a group of over 100 scholars on democracy who noted that several states “no longer meet the minimum conditions for free and fair elections” due to Republicans passing radical voting restrictions.
“Glenn Youngkin’s complete allegiance to Donald Trump is a testament to his support for Trump’s Big Lie and the voting restrictions that come with it,” said Manuel Bonder, DPVA spokesman. “Virginia’s next governor must be steadfastly committed to protecting voting rights and opposing the growing threats to American democracy. Glenn Youngkin has already chosen to side with Trump’s deranged conspiracy theories — proving once again that he is wrong for Virginia.”
