From EMILY’s List:
In case you missed it, GOP candidate for lieutenant governor of Virginia Winsome Sears spewed misinformation in an interview with Water Cooler Politics about reproductive rights and compared clinics that provide health care services to the Ku Klux Klan.
Tonya Williams, director of strategic communications at EMILY’s List, released the following statement in response:
“These extremist remarks prove that Winsome Sears is out of touch with Virginia families. Sears and her running mates want to take Virginia backward by making reproductive health care for survivors of rape and incest illegal. That is why EMILY’s List is backing Del. Hala Ayala in the race for lieutenant governor of Virginia. Hala has been a champion for women and families and a leader in the progress the commonwealth has made to make health care more affordable and accessible, raise teacher pay, and remove restrictions on reproductive freedom. We are confident Virginians will see Sears for who she is and once again choose progress when they cast their votes this November.”
Below is an excerpt from the interview:
Winsome Sears: “Then when it comes to being pro-life. My God, my God, we, Black folks are now the number three minority. We used to be number one. We’re not having our babies. We are not having our babies. And that’s not to pit one minority against another. And I hate that word minority, but that’s not to pit one people, group, against another. It’s just to say, folks, we are doing to ourselves what the KKK could never have done. They are giddy. I want to ask you a question. What if I wrote a bill to get passed as the law that only Black women could have abortions? What would that tell you? You would start saying to yourselves, wait a minute, wait a minute. Only Black women can have abortions and the government will pay for it. What are they trying to do, kill us off? Exactly.”
