Committee announces landmark investments in House of Delegates and lieutenant governor races

WASHINGTON — The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee and its affiliated groups are announcing a September investment of $500,000 in Virginia, bringing the committee and its affiliates’ total planned investment to nearly $2.3 million, as it prepares for Virginia’s midterm election this November.

Defending the Democratic majority in Virginia is the DLCC’s top priority this year. For the first time ever, the committee will give $100,000 to the lieutenant governor’s race because of its potential impact on breaking ties in the Virginia Senate where Democrats only hold a narrow two-seat majority. In the first big election of an off-year under a Democratic administration when Republicans feel emboldened, Democrats can’t afford to be complacent.

The DLCC’s investments will be used to communicate to voters the accomplishments of the Democratic majority, hold Republicans accountable for their radical right-wing positions, and build field infrastructure to ensure a victory in November.

“There is so much at stake in Virginia this cycle,” said Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Jessica Post. “The Republican slate of Trump acolytes have been crystal clear about their agenda if they win the majority: they will roll back voting rights, ban abortions, and rip away access to health care for half a million Virginians. The DLCC is making sure our candidates are well resourced so they can get their message out to voters and win.”

The Virginia Republican Party’s extreme agenda is completely out of step with working families across the Old Dominion. Not only is the GOP running insurrectionist candidates, but abortion rights are on the ballot this November. Republicans have said it themselves — if they gain control, they’ll ban abortion and defund Planned Parenthood. Meanwhile, Democrats have made child care more affordable for working families, strengthened voting rights, passed sweeping criminal justice reform measures, created tuition-free community college programs, raised the minimum wage, ended surprise medical billing, provided eviction and utility aid, and made Virginia the “Top State for Business.”

“Since flipping the legislature in 2019, Virginia has been a model of what can be accomplished when Democrats hold the gavel,” added Post. “With progressive legislation stalling at the federal level, it is more important than ever that we invest in holding Democratic majorities in statehouses across the country.”
