From the Democratic Party of Virginia:
Richmond, VA – This session, Governor Youngkin and Republicans have waged war with our public schools. But as Republicans attempted to defund our public schools, Virginia Democrats fought tooth and nail to defend our public schools – ensuring every Virginia student has the opportunity to receive a world-class education.
During his first weeks in office, Governor Youngkin and his Republican colleagues have repeatedly threatened to defund public education. Republicans’ proposed budget is proof of their true intentions. They have attempted to cut hundreds of millions in funding for public education, including gutting teacher pay raises by 20% and slashing tens of millions in funding for early childhood education – a priority that will set Virginia’s youngest learners up for success and generate a generational return on investment.
During this session, Virginia Democrats proposed a comprehensive budget that will invest in Virginia’s public schools, support hard-working teachers and prepare students for good-paying jobs of the future and defeated bad Republican bills funneling money away from our public schools. Through teacher pay raises, additional funding for critical support staff, and investments in early childhood education, Democrats have once again reaffirmed their commitment to the public school system and Virginia’s students.
“Democrats are the party of public education and we have demonstrated that time and time again this session,” said DPVA Chair Susan Swecker. “Despite countless Republican efforts to cut funding for our schools and their employees, Virginia Democrats have stood strong to ensure that we’re offering the world-class education that every Virginia student deserves.”
