Gov. Youngkin Doubles Down on His Anti-Choice Stance, Participates in March for Life

Lt. Gov. Sears Declares “Abortion is Wicked”

Richmond, VA – Today Governor Youngkin and Lt. Governor Winsome Sears participated in the far-right March for Life, doubling down on their anti-choice stance. In a speech at the demonstration in Richmond, Lt. Gov Sears made it clear that she and the Youngkin administration will do everything in their power to attack the right to choose and attempt to overturn a woman’s constitutional right to make decisions about her own health and body.

In the speech, Lt. Gov. Sears stated “I know that there are some people in the crowd that do not believe what we believe — that Abortion is wicked.” Governor Youngkin later joined the march, becoming the first Virginia Governor to do so.

This isn’t a new trend for Governor Youngkin and Republicans., During session, Republicans have continued their attacks on abortion rights and tried to pass several bills to turn Virginia back decades. From a 20-week abortion ban to limiting a person’s access to get the necessary health services they need, Republican attempts have been thwarted at every turn by Senate Democrats and the Brick Wall Caucus.

“Nothing is more personal than an individual’s ability to make decisions about their own reproductive health care,” said DPVA Chair Susan Swecker. “It is disturbing to see the Governor and Lt. Governor are actively attempting to overturn the will of the people and attack a woman’s rights to choose. Virginia Democrats are deeply committed to protecting Virginians’ access to health care, including reproductive health care – and will continue to ensure that the Commonwealth will not be pushed back to the restrictions of the 1950s and 60s when it comes to these rights.”
