This morning on right-wing radio (WRVA’s Richmond Morning News with John Reid) gave us a short version of her NRA speech the other day. As you can hear, she brought up a bunch of the red herrings that the NRA and its allies *always* bring up after a mass shooting. Those include:
- “What is the purpose…of putting in law after law after law after law if they’re not going to be enforced…we’ve got a billion laws on the books…and it doesn’t matter…”
- “All it means is that those of us who are law-abiding citizens are prevented from having our 2nd amendment rights.”
- “Look at Chicago…there are shootings every single day.”
- “Let’s look at the real issue…what it comes down to is we’re not going to have the ability to protect ourselves, because that’s what the 2nd amendment does…while we’re waiting on the police to come.”
- “Do you really think the gun is the problem?…There’s something else going on…”
- “When they’re determined to kill, they will find a way. They will get in a car and jump the curb and drive it right into a crowd.”
- “Mental health,” “fathers not at home,” “broken families,” “kids self medicating,” “social media,” kids being bullied.
- “We’re saying well it’s the guns? Folks, it’s not!”
Also, Sears declared: “We’re not elected to be cowardly…if you are on the right path, then stay on that path…it’s really that simple. You have to take the blows…the insults…all of it, because that’s what leaders are supposed to do…In the end, I come to…if it’s the right thing, then we have to do it. Was it right for me to go to the NRA and speak? Yes it was. Why? Because I do have 2nd amendment right and I have to protect that…”
Yes, Virginia, THIS is your Lt. Governor. It’s gonna be a looong four years.
