From the Kyle McDaniel for Fairfax County School Board campaign:
HERNDON, VA—Today, on the 24th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre, Kyle McDaniel calls for the establishment of a Fairfax County task force to address the urgent need for solutions to protect our kids, teachers, and parents from school shootings.
“Twenty-four years ago today, I was a 4th grader who watched the Columbine shooting unfold on live TV. In the time since, there have been nearly 400 school shootings, with little progress made to address the epidemic of gun violence. In fact, they are becoming more frequent, and more violent. Today I pledge that my first act on the School Board will be the creation of a task force, in conjunction with the Board of Supervisors, comprised of Fairfax County’s best and brightest minds to develop real, practical recommendations to protect our kids, teachers, parents, and community from school shootings.”
McDaniel continued: “Last year a gunman murdered nineteen kids and two teachers in Uvalde, TX. The next day, I dropped my little girl off at preschool and wondered if that would be the last time doing so. That gut wrenching thought is experienced by tens of millions of parents across the country. I will not stand idly by while our kids are sacrificed on the altar of guns.”
McDaniel concluded: “School shootings are a uniquely American problem. This task force is a way we can finally begin to make progress towards a world where active shooter drills, metal detectors, and bullet proof backpacks are things of the past. I will fight to build a world where our kids biggest fear is not an active shooter, but bedtime.”
