From DPVA:
Virginia Is The Final State In The South Without A GOP Abortion Ban
RICHMOND, VA – Today, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed into law a bill banning most abortions after just six weeks of pregnancy, making Virginia the only Southern state without a post-Roe abortion ban.
Following the overturn of Roe v. Wade last summer, every state across the South has imposed new restrictions on abortion except the Commonwealth of Virginia, where our Senate Democrats’ “brick wall” stopped multiple GOP abortion bans from passing earlier this year.
“Virginia now stands alone as the only state in the South where the GOP has not successfully imposed a post-Roe ban on abortion,” said Susan Swecker, Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Virginia. “Women across the South, and particularly here in Virginia, won’t let the GOP forget what they’ve done. You’ve come for our rights – and we’re coming for your seats in November.”
In January, a CNU Poll found that more than 70% of Virginians are against additional abortion restrictions. Many experts see the November General Assembly elections in Virginia as a referendum on the Virginia GOP’s pledge to ban abortion in the Commonwealth if they retake the majority in both houses. Election Day is Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
