Richmond City Electoral Board Eliminates Sunday Voting

Richmond, VA – Today, the Richmond City Electoral Board met to reverse their previous decision to close two early voting locations after it was determined to be an illegal action. While their vote to reverse their prior illegal action was a victory for many Richmond activists – including leaders with the City of Richmond, the NAACP, and the Democratic Party of Virginia – the Board also voted to eliminate Sunday voting, a move that experts say will overwhelmingly impact ballot access for Black voters.

Following the Richmond City Electoral Board’s decision to eliminate Sunday voting, DPVA’s Voter Protection Director, Aaron Mukerjee, released this statement:

“Virginia Republicans say they support early voting, but time and again their actions show otherwise. GOP officials just added Richmond to the growing list of localities across the state where MAGA Republicans have banned Sunday voting. It is no secret that these restrictions on early voting disproportionately impact voters of color and roll back decades of progress on voting rights.

We were proud to stand with activists, community members, and elected officials in Richmond who held the Electoral Board accountable for its illegal decision to remove satellite early voting locations. But as Governor Youngkin and Virginia Republicans have now repeatedly made clear, the struggle for voting rights in Virginia is far from over.”
