REMINDER AS IDALIA SLAMS EAST COAST: Rep. Kiggans Voted to Cut FEMA by $2.5 Billion

Rep. Kiggans Voted For The Default on America Act Which Would Have Cut 3,200 FEMA Staff

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As Hurricane Idalia intensifies, some Republicans are now calling for increased disaster relief as Hurricane Idalia slams states along the East Coast. However, it was House Republicans who voted earlier this year to cut FEMA’s budget by $2.5 billion. Americans across the country are already reeling from one of the worst Augusts in modern history: deadly fires in Hawaii, wildfires in Louisiana, flooding in Vermont and now, the hurricane in Florida.

“The latest natural disaster hangs a lantern on MAGA Republicans’ extreme agenda that puts thousands of Americans at risk,” said Zac Petkanas, spokesperson for the House Accountability War Room. “With the full knowledge that storm season was around the corner, Congresswoman Kiggans voted to gut funding for FEMA, which will be crucial to helping Americans recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Idalia. Unfortunately, this is no surprise from a group of partisan ideologues who consistently prioritize wealthy billionaire donors at the expense of everyday Americans looking for their help in times of crisis.”

Background information:

  • From Third Way: “The Default on America Act would cut $2.5 billion from FEMA’s budget, resulting in the loss of 3,200 staff that help Americans cope and recover when disaster strikes in their community.”
  • Earlier this month, NOAA increased its 2023 Atlantic hurricane season from “near normal” to “above normal.”
