In Virginia SD02, the Differences Between Democrat Kathy Beery and Far-Right-Republican Mark Obenshain Could Not Be Starker

2

From the Kathy Beery for VA Senate campaign:

A comparison of Candidates for Virginia Senate District 2
(spanning Augusta, Bath, Highland, Page & Rockingham Counties, Harrisonburg, and other towns of the central Shenandoah Valley.)

Two main party candidates are running this fall to be the Virginia Senator for District 2. Their biographical and ideological differences could not be starker.

They are Kathy Beery, a teacher-researcher-activist, but a newcomer to political office, and Mark Obenshain a 20-year incumbent whose work life has primarily been spent in the legislature. One comes from the rank and file working class, growing up in the Baptist Children’s Home. The other is the closest thing the Valley has to aristocracy, the son of revered Republican patriarch Richard Obenshain.

Obenshain runs with a $600K war-chest that includes money from well known national funders like Charles Koch and Betsy DeVos, while Beery ‘s campaign runs on a shoestring of small, local donations and person to person contact. Mark sees government as something that has been done to the people, mostly in the form of unnecessary taxation. Kathy sees government as part of the social contract we agree to together to provide the services that make our lives better.
