RELEASE: DLCC Announces Additional Six-Figure Investment Into Virginia House Tying Legislative Elections to National Republicans’ Inability to Govern

If Republicans can’t even come together to choose a Speaker of the House, how do we expect them to lead the commonwealth?

WASHINGTON — Today, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee announced a new six-figure investment supporting the Virginia House caucus in response to the silly yet predictable Republican Speaker fight and the fact that the Republican Party today has no interest in leadership or doing the actual work of government.

After it took Rep. Kevin McCarthy 15 tries to win the Speaker’s gavel, far-right Republicans removed him for negotiating with Democrats and doing the bare minimum to temporarily keep our government running – narrowly avoiding a shutdown that would have cost federal employees’ their paychecks and livelihoods. Over 150,000 federal employees live in Virginia. Now, as world events continue to rage and aid is needed for our allies, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives still can’t do the basic work of governing and choosing a leader.

This shows what we’ve always known: Outside of taking away fundamental freedoms like access to abortion, Republicans aren’t interested in actually governing. This brings us to the Virginia legislative elections. Virginia has real issues at stake, including protecting our communities, putting a check on MAGA extremism, and safeguarding the freedoms we hold near and dear. With Republican dysfunction at the national level, why should any Virginian trust Republicans to gain a trifecta of their state government?

Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Communications Director Abhi Rahman issued the following statement:

“Republican dysfunction has become a hallmark of national politics. Their refusal to do the basic requirements of government, including choosing a Speaker, shows us that this is all a game to them and they don’t care about the people they were elected to represent. If national Republicans continue to show they won’t govern, why would Virginia Republicans be any different? That’s why the DLCC is announcing another six-figure investment in Virginia, following the $2 million we’ve already invested this cycle into both the Virginia House and Senate caucuses.

“The only thing Republicans agree on is imposing an abortion ban everywhere they possibly can. It’s time to elect Democrats in Virginia to put a check on MAGA Republican extremism in the commonwealth.”

The DLCC was the first national organization to be on the ground in Virginia this year and these  new investments join this month’s earlier investments that make the DLCC among the largest direct contributors among national Democratic groups in Virginia this cycle.  These investments have supported the Democratic caucuses, fought back against Republicans trying to flood Virginia with money, and helped ensure that Democrats are getting out the vote and holding Gov. Youngkin and the GOP accountable – neighborhood by neighborhood, block by block.

The DLCC is the official Democratic Party committee dedicated to winning America’s state legislatures. Last year, the DLCC defied the odds by not losing any state legislative majorities, flipping four key chambers, and creating four new Democratic trifectas – the best midterm year for the party in power since at least 1934. State legislatures are the building blocks of our democracy and pass the policies that have the biggest impact on Americans’ day-to-day lives.
