"...it's difficult to support a candidate who, having lost an election—who tries to use the powers of the presidency to overturn that election. That is anything but respect for the rule of law."

Flake: “I know that a lot of conservative Republicans feel the way I do—that you just can’t support a candidate like [Trump].”

This morning, former Arizona Republican U.S. Senator Jeff Flake announced his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz.

In his first television interview following the endorsement, former Senator Flake lauded Vice President Harris for her character, respect for the rule of law, and her support for bipartisan immigration reform and securing the Southern border.

Below are some key moments from Flake:

On Vice President Harris’ border proposals: “I’m happy that she went to the border and I was pleased to hear what she had to say… She’s been… [an] attorney general. She knows what it takes, she knows the problems of the border, so I was glad to see her go down there.” …

“We’ve got to have a situation where we have comprehensive reform. One thing that she brings to the table is that she knows how to work on a bipartisan basis, and if we do immigration reform that endures, it’s going to have to be bipartisan. So I’m obviously very pleased that she would sign the legislation that was worked up in the Senate. That’s what we need to do. It needs to be bipartisan in order for it to be lasting.”

On Republicans supporting Harris-Walz: “I think Republicans believe in the rule of law in particular, and it’s difficult to support a candidate who, having lost an election—who tries to use the powers of the presidency to overturn that election. That is anything but respect for the rule of law. So I know that a lot of conservative Republicans feel the way I do—that you just can’t support a candidate like that.”

On Trump’s economic proposal: “To pretend that we’re going to get a windfall of money from some foreign government because we’re imposing tariffs just doesn’t jibe with where conservatives have been on free trade.”

On winning Arizona: “I do think that Vice President Harris can win Arizona. I think she’s gaining here, so I think she ought to court all voters, and I do believe that that includes moderate Republicans and conservative Republicans… She ought to court everyone, and I think she’ll do well here.”
