Glenn Youngkin Again Disgraces Virginia and the Rule of Law With Bald-Faced Lies to “Sanewash” Trump

Yesterday, Glenn Youngkin appeared on CNN’s State of the Union with Jake Tapper, where he–once again–lied about Donald Trump’s own words. When asked if he supported Trump saying, “We have some sick people, radical left lunatics, and I think it should be very easily handled, if necessary, by the National Guard, or if necessary, by the military,” Youngkin responded that Tapper was “misinterpreting” and “misrepresenting” what Trump meant.

Tapper: “I am literally reading his quotes. I am literally reading his quotes to you, and I played them earlier so you could hear that they were not made up by me…I am talking about Donald Trump saying he wants to use the National Guard and the military to go after the left.”

Youngkin: “I don’t believe that’s what he’s saying.”

Tapper: “I played the quote and I read it to you. You wish that he weren’t saying that, but that’s what he is saying.”

A sampling of the damning criticism of Youngkin:

Joe Scarborough: “Glenn Youngkin is defending the use of the Army and the National Guard against Democrats. Against Donald Trump’s political opponents. That’s where we are, that’s where America, that’s where the GOP is three weeks away from the most important election of our lifetime.”

Tom Nichols: “It seems like only yesterday that Glenn Youngkin was supposed to be one of the good Republicans, who would never do something completely shameful like this.”

Bill Kristol: “George Orwell on Glenn Youngkin: The Party told him to reject the evidence of his eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

Jonathan Martin (Politico): “A window onto the humiliation required of Republicans to support Trump, who made clear he meant *domestic* pol opponents. But @GlennYoungkin has to pretend otherwise.”

Tom Sherwood (WAMU): “Va Republican Gov Glenn Youngkin accuses CNN’s Jake Tapper of “misinterpreting” Trump’s threat to use the military against leftists like Rep. Adam Schiff. This after Tapper played unedited video and read Trump’s exact quotes. It’s deny, deny, deny, never mind facts campaigning.”

Huffington Post: “Glenn Youngkin tries to sanewash Donald Trump and a stunned Jake Tapper wasn’t having it.”

Delegate Jay Jones: “Problematic and dangerously and willfully ignorant. This is why voting is critical – when we sit elections out, mistakes happen. We can’t let this happen again, especially in Virginia. Make a plan at http://iwillvote.com/va today.”

Delegate Cia Price: “Dangerous lies and rhetoric by Republican Governors have put disaster responses in jeopardy and are used to try to suppress the vote. Virginia is no exception. This is what the history books warn us about – Don’t fall for the repeat of fascism or fascism’s enabling friends.”
