It’s really amazing how many Virginia Democratic “heavyweights” have now endorsed Del. Kannan Srinivasan for the Democratic nomination in SD32 (where current State Senator Suhas Subramanyam will be leaving to join the U.S. House of Representatives from VA10).  See below for a press release announcing that US Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine have now joined Congressman-elect Subramanyam, Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA07), VA House Speaker Don Scott, VA Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, Loudoun County Chair Phyllis Randall, State Senator Russet Perry “and the majority of Loudoun County Democratic leaders” in endorsing Srinivasan.

Other announced Democratic candidates for this nomination  – which will be decided on Saturday in a “firehouse primary” held at five locations (see below for more information) – so far are Srinivasan, former Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney Buta Biberaj, Sree NagiReddi, Puja Khanna, Hurunnessa Fariad and former VA Del. Ibraheem Samirah. But clearly, so far at least, top Virginia Democrats appear to be going overwhelmingly with Srinivasan – because, from what I understand, they view him as both highly qualified and also the most electable (they’re worried that some of the other candidates could potentially lose the seat, and with Democrats holding only a narrow 21-19 majority in the VA State Senate, they definitely don’t want to take any chances at this point).

Senator Mark Warner and Senator Tim Kaine Endorse Delegate Kannan Srinivasan for Senate District 32 Special Election

Ashburn, VA – Today, Delegate Kannan Srinivasan announced the support of United States Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine for the Democratic nomination to fill Congressman-Elect Suhas Subramanyam’s District 32 State Senate seat.

This announcement follows notable endorsements from Congressman-Elect Suhas Subramanyam and Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, House Speaker Don Scott and Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, and the majority of Loudoun County Democratic leaders. With Loudoun County swinging 9 points to the right during the Presidential election, community and statewide leaders are backing Kannan as they recognize he is the best candidate to win this district and protect our razor-thin one seat State Senate Democratic majority. Kannan won his past two elections with over 60% of the vote and will ensure Senate Democrats continue fighting for women’s reproductive rights, gun violence prevention, and protecting our democracy.

Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine issued the following statement:

“To keep Virginia moving forward, we must continue to lower everyday costs for working families. That is why we need to keep a Democratic majority in the State Senate. Kannan Srinivasan is the right leader to get it done.

Kannan’s story is one that’s only possible in America. After immigrating to the United States in the early 1990s, he established himself as a business leader helping to grow a technology company and create jobs. Kannan also worked with us as Chair of the Virginia Medicaid Board to expand Medicaid – helping thousands of Virginians obtain affordable health insurance.

More recently, Kannan has been a leader in the House of Delegates working to protect women’s reproductive rights, expand affordable healthcare, and strengthen public education. With so much at stake, we hope that Loudoun voters will support our friend, Delegate Kannan Srinivasan, for Virginia’s 32nd Senate District.”

Delegate Kannan Srinivasan, a 25 year Loudoun resident and the first Indian American immigrant to serve in the House of Delegates, represents House District 26. As Delegate, Kannan championed women’s reproductive rights, voting rights,  healthcare, and gun violence prevention. He’s now running for Virginia’s 32nd Senate District to ensure Democrats retain their single seat majority and act as a brick wall against the resurgence of Trump-era extremism.
