From the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA); congrats to new DPVA Chair Lamont Bagby and good luck in the new position! Also, thanks to Susan Swecker for her many years of service and dedication. As for DPVA, what we need is a strong, energized, effective party that can help Virginia Democrats win this November’s statewide and House of Delegates elections (preferably by wide margins for governor, LG, and AG, and preferably picking up a bunch of House of Delegates seats), as well as in 2026 and beyond. Let’s do it!

P.S. The vote for Chair was: Lamont Bagby 172 – Zach Pruckowski 57 – Josh Stanfield 29 – Absentions 4

Senator Lamont Bagby Elected as Chair of the Democratic Party of Virginia

On Saturday, the Democratic Party of Virginia Central Committee elected Senator Lamont Bagby as their Chairman. Bagby succeeds Susan Swecker, who has served as Chairwoman since March 2015.

Bagby currently represents the 9th Senate District, elected in 2023. He previously served as a Delegate, representing the 74th House District, from 2015 to 2023. He has also been Chair of the bicameral Virginia Legislative Black Caucus since 2017.

Before serving in the General Assembly, Bagby was a member of the Henrico County School Board from 2008 to 2015, serving as chair in 2011. He worked as an educator before running for public office.

“I am truly humbled and grateful to the members of the Central Committee for entrusting me with the honor of leading the Democratic Party of Virginia during this pivotal moment in our Commonwealth’s history,” said Bagby. “As we face critical elections this November and beyond, we must continue to champion a bold vision that prioritizes the needs of working families, strengthens our communities, and safeguards the freedoms of all Virginians. I am ready to roll up my sleeves, work with local committees, engage directly with voters, and ensure our party keeps leading Virginia toward a brighter and better future.”

“From his time on the Henrico County School Board to his work in the General Assembly, Senator Bagby has been a driving force in moving Virginia forward,” said Swecker. “I know he will continue to lead our party to new heights as we approach critical elections this November and face the uncharted challenges to our Commonwealth posed by the Trump administration.”

Bagby won with 66% of the vote and assumes the role of Chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia effective immediately.
