On 60th Anniversary of Medicaid Being Signed into Law, Elected Leaders and Virginians Call Out Sears for Cheering on Cuts to Healthcare

Winsome Earle-Sears: “The bill as you know now does so many great things”

VIRGINIA – Today, on the 60th Anniversary of Medicaid being signed into law, elected leaders and Virginians called out Winsome Earle-Sears’ for cheering on Trump’s tax bill, saying it “does so many great things” — even though it will take healthcare away from 322,000 Virginians and force rural hospitals to close.

Ahead of the anniversary, Virginia Democrats launched three billboards along I-64 highlighting Winsome Earle-Sears praising the Trump tax bill that’s taking healthcare away from 322,000 Virginians and will force at least six rural hospitals to close.

“It’s disappointing that someone who has been elected to serve the Commonwealth not only refuses to stand up for Virginians, but praises a bill that threatens their healthcare,” said Aida Pacheco, Virginian with a personal Medicaid story. “Virginians like my daughter shouldn’t have to worry about whether they will lose the coverage that helps them treat their chronic conditions. We deserve leaders who will stand up and fight to protect access to affordable healthcare.”

“The tax bill signed by Donald Trump this month includes cuts to Medicaid that will be devastating for so many Virginians and their families,” said Senator Creigh Deeds. “Instead of standing up to these attacks on healthcare, Winsome Earle-Sears has made clear her priority is Donald Trump’s agenda – not Virginians. She cheered on Trump’s tax bill saying it ‘does so many great things,’ it’s disqualifying.”

“For many Virginians, medical costs from doctors appointments to prescription drugs will increase. For others, they’ll lose access to the home healthcare they need. And some Virginians will even lose their insurance outright. Sears thinks these are ‘great things,’” said Senator Jennifer Boysko.

Here’s what to know about Sears’ cheering on healthcare cuts:

  • Sears praised Trump’s tax bill saying it “does so many great things” while  it will take healthcare away from 322,000 Virginians and force six rural hospitals to close.
  • Sears told the 322,000 Virginians who will lose healthcare and six rural hospitals facing closure as a result of the bill, “don’t panic.”
  • Polling first reported by Politico finds that the majority of Virginia voters have serious concerns about Winsome Earle-Sears’ support of Donald Trump’s tax bill. The polling also finds Sears’ support for the bill’s health care cuts is deeply unpopular with voters.
