Also note that Glenn Youngkin, Winsome Earle-Sears, John Reid, Jason Miyares, Jen Kiggans, Rob Wittman, etc. have all been in lockstep behind Trump, won’t break with him no matter what, and are doing NOTHING to defend Virginia or Virginians. ~ Senators call on Republicans to end shut down, protect health care ~

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) released the following statement after the Trump administration announced “substantial” layoffs of federal workers amid the government shutdown:

“Donald Trump and Russ Vought are once again showing us exactly who they are: reckless ideologues willing to inflict real pain on hardworking Americans to score political points. They have repeatedly treated federal employees not as partners in serving the American people, but as punching bags for their political agenda. Now, in the middle of a shutdown manufactured by Republicans – who control the House, the Senate, and the White House – they’re doubling down by laying off federal workers, turning their own failure to govern into a direct attack on the people who keep this country running and jeopardizing vital government services. 

“Let’s be very clear: this is not an unfortunate byproduct of the government shutdown, but a deliberate choice. Republicans are intentionally holding federal workers hostage to force through their agenda driving up health care costs for millions. Instead of keeping health premiums affordable, the Trump administration is using America’s public servants as pawns to advance policies that harm working families. It’s irresponsible, it’s cruel, and it won’t work. It’s time for Republicans in Congress to end this shutdown and work with us to keep health care affordable for all Americans.”

Speaker Don Scott Statement on Trump Firing Federal Workers Amid Shutdown 
RICHMOND, VA – Virginia Speaker of the House of Delegates, Don Scott, released the following statement on Trump’s mass firing of federal workers amid a shutdown.

“In a very cowardly way, Republicans are hurting Virginia families by laying off workers on a Friday afternoon. Trump and Republicans forced this shutdown because they refused to protect Virginians from skyrocketing health care premiums. Virginians could see their monthly premiums increase as much as $2,000 if Republicans don’t come to the table. But instead of working with Democrats to reopen the government and keep families covered and costs low, they’ve doubled down — deliberately choosing to inflict maximum pain on Virginians.

“Using people’s livelihoods as a partisan political bargaining chip is a cruel act. These are Virginians who will lose their homes, go without medication, and struggle to put food on the table. This isn’t a game.

“Virginia Republicans continue to stand by and stay silent as Virginians lose their jobs. Time and again, when it’s a choice between Trump and the people they represent, they choose Trump — even as Virginians get hurt.”

Walkinshaw Slams Trump, Vought Over Reports of Illegal Mass Firing Scheme During Shutdown 

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman James R. Walkinshaw (VA-11), a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, released the following statement following reports that an illegal mass firing scheme has begun amidst a government shutdown.

“If Russ Vought wants to end Trump’s shutdown, he should ask Speaker Johnson to end the Congressional Republican vacation and show up to negotiate a bipartisan budget. Any large-scale RIFs underway are flatly illegal. 

While Trump tries and fails to scare Democrats, millions of Americans are terrified of the health care crisis that Washington Republicans have created.”

“Everywhere I travel across our Commonwealth, I continue to hear from Virginia servicemembers, seniors, federal workers, and families who are hurting because of the Trump Administration’s attacks on Virginia’s economy and workforce. Now, President Trump is recklessly escalating this chaos by unleashing mass firings on Virginia’s federal workers.

“Just last night on the debate stage, my opponent refused to call on President Trump to stop this chaos. “The Trump administration is treating Virginia families as political pawns as he makes good on his promise to enact mass firings of the federal workforce and further hurt Virginia’s economy.

“As the Trump administration’s chaos continues to directly hurt the Commonwealth, John Reid still refuses to put partisan loyalty aside and stand up for Virginia. He has praised Trump’s decision to fire thousands of Virginia workers and doubles down on his lies about the Virginia health clinics that have closed because of the cruel GOP budget he supports.
