From skyrocketing prices, to increases in Virginia’s unemployment rates, to tens of thousands of Virginians at risk of losing health care, to soaring premiums, Donald Trump has been a disaster for Virginians
Today, ahead of Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, the DNC released the impact of Donald Trump’s first year in Virginia. Since Donald Trump took office last year, he has been a complete disaster for Virginians. Since Trump took office, working families are struggling with skyrocketing prices and a dismal job market, rural communities are being gutted, family farm bankruptcies are soaring, and Virginia’s economy is taking a nosedive. Simply put, as Trump focuses on building his gilded ballroom and enriching billionaires, Virginia families are left suffering.
By nearly every metric, Donald Trump has been a disaster for Virginia. There’s a reason why Trump’s approval rating is plummeting to historic lows — his failed economic agenda has made the cost of living too expensive for Virginians. This is Trump’s America: the ultrawealthy first, Virginians last.
DNC Chair Ken Martin issued the following statement:
“As Donald Trump prepares to take the stage tonight, there’s a reason he is the least popular president in modern American history at this point in his term. Staring down the threat of a Trump Recession, Trump has spent his first year wining and dining CEOs and billionaires while costs continue to skyrocket, jobs are being lost at a historic rate, and health care has become unaffordable and inaccessible for millions of Americans. Worst of all, Trump promised to lower costs for Virginia families on Day One, but he’s done the exact opposite. Families are worse off than they were a year ago, but Democrats are standing up to fight for them. As Trump has his fun with gilded ballrooms and Great Gatsby parties while ignoring everybody else, Virginia families know Democrats will keep fighting on their behalf every day to lower costs and improve lives.”
Trump’s State of the Union for Virginians by the numbers:
Costs:
- Working Virginians have already lost $553 dollars from paying higher costs due to Trump’s inflation.
- Working families have also lost $590 dollars last year from Trump and Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill and reckless tariffs.
Health Care and Food Assistance:
- Trump and Republicans refused to extend ACA tax credits, which nearly 143,734 Virginians relied on last year.
- Republicans’ failure to extend enhanced ACA tax credits is expected to raise premiums for marketplace enrollees by 117% in Virginia.
- Thanks to Trump and Republicans’ health care agenda, 140,000 Virginians will lose insurance by 2034.
- Donald Trump’s SNAP cuts will cause 447,000 Virginians to lose some or all of their food assistance.
Unemployment:
- Since Donald Trump reentered office, Virginia’s unemployment rate has increased by 0.6%.
- Virginia has lost 5,900 manufacturing jobs since Trump took office.
