Global oil and gas prices have soared over the past three weeks as a result of President Trump’s attack on Iran and the shutdown of oil and LNG tanker traffic in the Persian Gulf. This crisis makes clean, domestic renewable energy sources like wind and solar even more attractive than ever before. Yet here in the U.S., Trump and his faithful supporter Rep. Jen Kiggans (R–VA02) are paradoxically doing everything they can to squelch the development of renewable energy.
In the recent past, Rep. Kiggans claimed to support what she calls an “all-of-the-above” energy policy that includes clean energy options such as renewables, which are vitally important to Virginia’s future economy and security. In fact, when Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (there was, of course, nothing “Beautiful” about it) was going through Congress last summer, Kiggans and a handful of other Congressional Republicans urged their own party leadership to revise the legislation to retain tax incentives for renewable energy. They pressed leaders to “restore common sense and deliver a truly pro-energy growth final bill.” But their effort failed, and Trump’s bill went forward, containing the abrupt rollback of tax breaks for renewable energy. In the end, Jen Kiggans bent the knee to Trump and voted for the bill, despite what she herself called its “shortsighted provisions.”
In short, Rep. Kiggans flip-flopped—voting for a bill she said she didn’t believe in and that harms Virginia – putting her loyalty to Trump ahead of both her own convictions and the interests of future generations of Virginians.
In December 2025, the Trump administration made another shortsighted move to stifle green energy—impacting Kiggans’ own district. The administration halted the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project off the Virginia Beach coast. This project is set to generate 2,600 megawatts of clean electricity—enough to power 660,000 homes, schools, and military installations across Coastal Virginia.
So what did Jen Kiggans do to protest this disastrous decision? She carried on with her ineffectual flailing by writing to the responsible Cabinet secretaries, “respectfully requesting additional information.” She wrote (and was completely ignored by her Trump administration allies): “Further delay prevents our constituents from accessing the affordable and reliable electricity they need and expect.”
We couldn’t agree more. Offshore wind energy is a crucial component of an affordable energy plan for Virginia that isn’t vulnerable to international crises. Which is why it’s too bad that when presented with an opportunity to defend the interests of her district, Jen Kiggans‘ feeble reaction is to “respectfully request information.” So once again, we have an example of how Kiggans’ appeasement of Trump wins out over actually doing what’s right for her constituents and her country.
All of which is yet another great reason why this November, it will be time to vote out this Trump cheerleader, and instead elect a Democrat who actually cares about the citizens of VA02.
