ICYMI: Veterans Vote YES

Governor Ralph Northam, Speaker Don Scott, Delegate Michael Feggans Veterans & Military Families Caucus Chair Susan Hippen Hold Press Conference

Norfolk, Va. — Today, former Governor Ralph Northam, Speaker Don Scott, Delegate Michael Feggans, Virginia Democrats Veterans & Military Families Caucus Chair Susan Hippen, and Virginia veterans held a press conference in Norfolk urging Virginians to vote YES in the upcoming referendum to stop Trump’s power grab and level the playing field in the 2026 midterms.

U.S. Army veteran Governor Northam emphasized that “there is nothing more important than fair elections and openness to voting.” Northam went on to describe President Trump’s actions across the nation as “a power grab, an attack on our democracy” and emphasized that the referendum is meant “to level the playing field.”

U.S. Navy veteran Speaker Don Scott highlighted that Virginians have a key role in stopping Donald Trump: “We have stood up, and we will continue to stand up. We’re not going to let somebody steal this next election. “This is Virginia, we don’t like kings.”

U.S. Air Force veteran Delegate Michael Feggans said “I also took an oath to defend the Constitution. That oath didn’t end just when I took off the uniform.” Feggans voted from overseas while deployed, an experience that serves as a powerful reminder of how important it is that Virginians voices are heard. “One of the most important things we want people to know is that this is temporary, and the voters ultimately get to decide what happens,” he said.

Navy Master Chief Petty Officer Susan Hippen underscored that the decisions made in Washington have real consequences for service members and their families. “The chaos in Washington isn’t just political, it has real impacts on our veterans and military families … Protecting democracy isn’t separate from supporting veterans. It is directly connected.”

Early voting is underway now through April 18, and Election Day is April 21.

About Virginians for Fair Elections

Virginians for Fair Elections is the campaign advocating for a constitutional amendment to protect fair representation and ensure Virginia voters — not politicians — have the final say over congressional district maps. The amendment is a temporary, emergency exception designed to level the playing field for Virginia’s congressional elections, with the Commonwealth’s bipartisan redistricting commission resuming full authority after the 2030 census.

  • More from Ralph Northam: “This started… in North Carolina, it happened in Texas. You know, when it happened, the people like Governor Youngkin and Republicans, congressional members in Virginia, I didn’t hear a word from you. Quiet…crickets, as we say.  And now that we’re just trying to level the playing field, letting the voters in Virginia choose how to move forward.  Well, they they’re upset about it and saying all these things, a lot of rhetoric uh that is a bunch of static in in my mind. But where were they? And  this is the greatest example of hypocrisy that I can even imagine. So if you didn’t like what happened in North Carolina and Missouri and Texas, what’s the deal here? So you can’t have it both ways.”
  • More from Speaker Scott: “I just looked at the vote tallies right now. If you look at our voter scores right now, last cycle in 2025, at the same point of early voting, we were about 60-40 voter profiles. If you look at VPAP, you can see it’s 60-40. Right now, it’s like 59-41. We good. I feel very good about this election. I feel like where it’s going, we’re going to win. And all of the hand wringing and pearl clutching will be to no avail. We’re going to send a message around this country that Virginia truly is for lovers. We’re going to save the country that we love and we’re going to win this election.”
