ARLINGTON, VA – Jonathan Dromgoole launched his campaign for Arlington County Board. Jonathan is seeking the Democratic nomination for one of two open seats in the upcoming June 20th primary election. His campaign is focused on not just increasing housing availability, but ensuring its affordability, expanding greenspaces to rebuild community, and supporting small business development while building a more inclusive Arlington. If elected, he would be the first queer Latino ever elected to the Arlington County Board.

“As queer immigrants, my husband and I knew what it was like to live in many cities without ever calling one home. But I am proud to say we found that sense of belonging here in Arlington, a county I love and am proud to now call home,” said Dromgoole. “With this optimism and hope in mind, I am excited to launch my campaign for the Arlington County Board so that I can serve my neighbors and help create systemic changes for our community, a future rooted in equity and prosperity for all residents. I firmly believe that to get there, we must ensure our government reflects the diversity of our county, which is our strength. With fresh ideas and diverse voices, we can come together and achieve new possibilities.”

“There is so much opportunity and possibility concentrated within these 26 miles. As an Arlington County Board member, I will ensure our county’s best days are still ahead, from protecting our environment, to increasing economic mobility, to ensuring people of all ages and backgrounds can afford to put down roots in this county,” Dromgoole added.

Jonathan has served in leadership roles of various organizations most notably the North Rosslyn Civic Association, the Latino Caucus and Equality Caucus of Arlington Democrats, as President of the Democratic Latino Organization of Virginia, founder of Juntos Por Virginia, and LULAC. In 2020, Governor Ralph Northam appointed him to the inaugural LGBTQ Advisory Board.

A graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and McCourt School of Public Policy as well as UVA’s Sorensen Institute, Jonathan’s lived experiences are reinforced through his academic and professional training. Jonathan currently leads the Presidential Appointments Initiative at LGBTQ Victory Institute, the only national organization dedicated to elevating LGBTQ leaders who can further equality at all levels of government. In just two years, his work led to 15% of the administration’s appointees being members of the LGBTQ community – the most in the history of the United States. Prior to this, he worked for the Inter-American Development Bank, the largest source of development financing for the region, where he championed the inclusion of indigenous and LGBTQ communities in the review of IDB policies.

As immigrants from Mexico and Venezuela respectively, Jonathan and his husband Juan found home in Arlington after graduating from college.
